The following items were taken out of order:
ITEM 3 - Update on Section 504 Evaluation-TDD Training
Housing Coordinator Debbie Jones-Thomas said the Section 504 Evaluation
Committee has looked at all city-owned facilities to determine what
facilities need to be modified to comply with ADA and as a result, have
developed a prioritized workplan. She mentioned the first group of
facilities to be modified will be the Senior Center Annex, Community
Activities Building, Veterans Memorial Senior Center and the Senior
Resource Center. Ms. Jones said the workplan will be available and open
to the public for comments for a 30 day period. The workplan will then go
to the City Council for approval and then return to the architect for plans
and specifications to be prepared before going out to bid. It was
requested that this matter be placed on the January agenda so the
Commission could review the workplan during the 30 day review period. Ms.
Jones noted that after work on the first group of sites is completed, a
second group will be worked on. The second group of facilities are: Fair
Oaks Community Center (all buildings), Red Morton Park, Schaberg Library,
Herkner Pool, Hoover Park, and Marlin and Shorebird Parks. Ms. Jones
suggested the Commissioners contact the transportation workgroup of the
Section 504 Committee if they have any transportation concerns, issues or
recommendations relating to ADA. She invited the Commissioners to attend a
meeting this evening of the Housing and Human Concerns Committee at which
the main topic would be updating their housing strategy.
Ms. Jones brought a TDD (telecommunication device for the deaf) device to
the meeting and demonstrated its use. She mentioned these devices are
provided to hearing impaired persons free of charge by the telephone
service and they allow people to communicate with hearing or speech
impaired persons. Commissioner Metzdorf mentioned she has a "talking
telephone" which is another type of device that enables her to communicate
with others. Ms. Jones said the communications workgroup of the Section
504 Committee is recommending one TDD device be installed at each city
facility. Currently there are devices at City Hall, Human Resources and
the Housing & Redevelopment Department. If the Section 504 recommends that
a particular building needs a TDD, they will pick up the cost of the
device.
ITEM 2 - Transportation
Chairperson Anthony said there has been no change by TRIPS, Paratransit
Coordinating Council or SamTrans regarding transportation issues.
ROUNDTABLE
-Superintendent Hartman reminded the Commissioners that the November
meeting is scheduled for Thursday, November 12 at the Senior Center Annex
because Wednesday, November 11 is Veterans Day.
-Superintendent Hartman reported on the Fox Theater Funding Project. She
mentioned three grant applications were received and the Civic Cultural
Commission has approved grants to Raices de Mexico and the Redwood
Symphony.
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at
10:45am to be reconvened at 9:00am on Thursday, November 12, 1992 at the
Senior Center Annex, 711 Nevada Street, Redwood City, California.
