The Commissioners discussed the idea of beginning an adult day care center
at the Veterans Memorial Center as being cost prohibitive and were
appreciative of Rosenor House being available at a reasonable price for
Redwood City seniors. Mr. Lang explained no one is turned away and Rosenor
House is licensed to accommodate 60 people. It was suggested Mr. Lang
apply to the Housing and Human Concerns Committee for funding in addition
to the Community Development Department for community block grant funds.
Executive Director Bransford noted the Fair Oaks Senior Center will be
losing $32,000 this coming year from the Area Agency on Aging for
Information and Referral Services as the County intends on centralizing
this function. She mentioned they also anticipate receiving a cut in
funding from United Way. Because of these anticipated cuts, she will be
increasing TEWCI's grant request to the City.
Superintendent Hartman suggested sending a report from the Senior Affairs
Commission in support of the Rosenor House funding request. She also
mentioned that since there is currently no representative from the Senior
Affairs Commission on the Housing and Human Concerns Committee that perhaps
one of the Commissioners could begin attending those meetings.
Commissioner Lloyd volunteered to attend.
ITEM 2 - Transportation
Chairperson Anthony read a report from SamTrans with an update of its
paratransit services program and noted that people could take 6 trips per
month with Rediwheels if arrangements are made 14 days ahead. The cost of
each trip would be .85c. The report also indicated future plans for the
Rediwheels program for 1993-1996. Chairperson Anthony said TRIPS is
disbanding and will become part of the PCC. He said he will continue
receiving paratransit information from them and will pass it onto the
Commission.
ITEM 3 - Vital Concerns of Seniors Survey
Chairperson Anthony said he recently discovered if someone's SSI check
was reduced to a particular level, the person would lose their eligibility
for Medi-Cal. The person would then need to apply through the Welfare
Department to get Medi-Cal coverage. He felt this was a very important
issue and it should be made to clear to anyone receiving SSI.
Executive Director Bransford announced that a representative from
Med-i-Cal will be speaking at the Fair Oaks Senior Center on February 23 at
11:30am and all are invited to attend.
Chairperson Anthony mentioned he attended the Joint Study Session between
the City Council and the Parks and Recreation Commission on February 1 and
found it to be well organized and informative. He felt with the
information obtained from the Vital Concerns of Seniors Survey, the
Commission would be able to meet with the City Council and supply them with
important information about the needs of seniors. He said five people,
including himself and Commissioners Berglund, Lloyd and Sharp worked on
tabulating the surveys last Saturday. Because of the complexity of the
surveys, the tabulating process is very time consuming. The Commissioners
will continue to work on tabulating the 300 survey responses received.
