Executive Director Bransford explained that the Housing and Human Concerns
Committee (HHCC) and the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) were the
only avenues that the City has for funding other senior programs outside of
the Veterans Memorial Senior Center operation. She felt there is a need to
look at those non-profit groups and their requests for funding, and to
support those agencies that provide services to the senior population. She
was especially concerned that the Commissioners support these agencies'
efforts to secure funding through HHCC and CDBG and she emphasized that she
felt housing is the most critical issue for seniors at this time.
ITEM 3 - Transportation
Executive Director Bransford said she looked into the possibility of using
the Fair Oaks Senior Center bus to transport some of the seniors from the
Veterans Memorial Senior Center. She spoke with Shea Muller of San Mateo
County who indicated it would be all right to do so.
Executive Director Bransford was also informed that the County will no
longer provide insurance coverage after July 1, 1993 for their bus. The
Fair Oaks Senior Center will still get $15,000 that will pay for the bus
driver's salary but they will still be responsible for all repairs and
maintenance costs for the bus. She will be calling their insurance carrier
to investigate the cost of insurance coverage.
Executive Director Bransford said SamTrans has changed their route on
Middlefield Road so it is no longer convenient for Fair Oaks seniors. She
contacted SamTrans to speak to them about this matter and they indicated
there were insufficient riders to continue the same route.
ROUNDTABLE
-Executive Director Bransford reported the Fair Oaks Senior Center is
observing Older Americans Month during May. She mentioned that last month
the Fair Oaks Senior Center recognized 25 volunteers at a lunch at Charlie
Brown's Restaurant.
-At the May 17 City Council meeting, there will be a run through of the
presentation for the "All American Cities Award" which will be held in
Florida this month. Redwood City has been selected as one of ten finalists
for this award and staff and community members will be making a
presentation and a video has been made for this award process. The City
will focus on Kainos, Project Read and the mentoring program through
Sequoia High School.
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs meeting was adjourned at 9:50am
to be reconvened on 9:00am on Wednesday, June 9, 1993 at the Fair Oaks
Senior Center, 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California.
