The Federal Government requires the City to develop
this study as a condition for receiving Federal funds. In order to
complete the study, the Housing Department will make an analysis of the
housing situation within the City and then target future funds to help
address particular housing issues. Ms. Jones-Thomas is looking for input
from the Commission regarding housing issues for seniors. She explained
that the study consists of 5-one year plans which are evaluated and updated
each year.
Chairperson Anthony felt that the two biggest housing issues for seniors
are cost and availability. Ms. Jones-Thomas explained that there are loans
available to qualified seniors to do home improvements and no payments have
to be made on the loan until the house is sold. She said the rate for the
loan is set by the Housing and Human Concerns Committee and can range from
0% to 6%.
