Debbie spoke about the Heron Court housing complex in Redwood Shores which
has 26 senior units with 6 units that are wheelchair accessible. She said
the City is looking at opportunities to provide affordable housing units
throughout the City and not just in one location. Chairperson Anthony
asked if the City would consider the idea of acquiring land in Redwood City
that might be zoned for a mobile home park.
Ms. Jones-Thomas spoke about the Shared Housing Program which completes
more than 80 matches per year. The program matches seniors who own their
own homes and want to stay there but need help, with people who live in the
senior's home and help out in exchange for rent. She mentioned a proposed
housing program called "Single Room Occupancy" (SRO). Units are built
which include one room with a bath and a small kitchenette. The program
might also include a provision for meals to be served in a communal dining
area. The Commissioners all agreed with the proposal and thought seniors
would be very receptive to SROs. Ms. Jones-Thomas mentioned there is
currently a proposal for a SRO in the downtown area.
The Commissioners were advised of a Needs Assessment Public Hearing to be
held by the Housing and Human Concerns Committee on Wednesday, August 11 at
6:00pm at the Fair Oaks Senior Center. The Committee will hear comments on
needs assessment for the CHAS which will then be taken back to the Planning
Commission. Supervisor Kucala, Commissioner Lloyd, Chairperson Anthony,
and Executive Director Bransford will attend the hearing.
Chairperson Anthony asked Ms. Jones-Thomas to keep the Seniors Affairs
Commission informed of the progress on all senior housing issues. Ms.
Jones-Thomas spoke about the current projects the Redevelopment Agency is
working on: site control of the old Whipple Lodge site; looking at
possible participation of a project on the Pacific Ready Mix site; the
Trestine project at the corner of Broadway and Main; and looking at the
Canned Food Store site. She said a housing development is being proposed
for property at Main and Middlefield.
Ms. Jones-Thomas thanked the Commissioners for their input and said she was
bringing back several good ideas for the CHAS. She suggested Architect
Jerry Winges come to a Commission meeting to present the plans and drawings
of the 504 modifications for City buildings. Supervisor Kucala suggested
having Debbie set up a table in the lobby of the Veterans Memorial Senior
Center once a month to distribute housing information to seniors and to
speak to them about the many programs available.
ITEMS 2, 3, and 4
Chairperson Anthony requested that due to the length of the meeting, Items
2, 3, and 4 be deferred until the August meeting.
The Planning Committee for the City Council Study Session arranged a
meeting to be held July 20 at 2:00pm at the Community Activities Building.
ROUNDTABLE
The Commissioners also requested a letter be sent to Debbie Jones-Thomas
(with a copy sent to the City Manager) thanking her for her presentation
today.
The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was adjourned at
11:00am to be reconvened at 9:00am on Wednesday, August 11, 1993 at the
Fair Oaks Senior Center, 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California.
