SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION MINUTES OF WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 11, 1993 COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chairperson Anthony, Commissioners Berglund, Lloyd, Metzdorf, Sharp and Truscelli COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Commissioner Jordan STAFF PRESENT: Park & Recreation Superintendent Sally Hartman, Recreation Supervisor Mary Kucala, Library Supervisor Val Hamilton, Secretary Denise Monroe GUESTS PRESENT: Executive Director Maria Bransford Chairperson Anthony called the regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission to order at 9:00 a.m. at the Fair Oaks Senior Center, 2600 Middlefield Road, Redwood City, California. APPROVAL OF MINUTES The minutes to the July meeting were approved as mailed. CORRESPONDENCE There was no correspondence. ITEM 1 - Vital Concerns of Seniors Survey Tally Report ITEM 2 - Plan for Proposed Study Session Superintendent Hartman said City Manager Ed Everett indicated that October 4 appears to be the date for the Study Session with the City Council. He estimated that 1 1/2 hours would be allocated for the presentation by the Commission. Chairperson Anthony reviewed the proposed outline for the Study Session and who would be making each of the subject presentations. He said he wants to stress that the results of the survey show that seniors are doing all they can to stay within their means and are cutting back in all areas. The areas which they have no control over are fees, such as sewer costs and taxes. He would like to see the City Council mitigate these fees for seniors. Chairperson Anthony said the comments from the surveys still need to be tabulated and will be presented to the City Council. The next meeting for the Steering Committee will be August 31. Superintendent Hartman said she would like to get more information from the I&R staff at the Veterans and Fair Oaks Senior Centers to determine if there are common problems, questions and concerns of the senior population which the City Council needs to be aware of. Maria Bransford and Mary Kucala both have statistical data relating to I&R and can have their I&R staff at the Study Session to help answer specific questions from the City Council .
