Chairperson Anthony said he felt the survey results were not indicative of
all areas of Redwood City since the majority of the results came from the
94061 zip code area. The City Council will be provided with a copy of the
survey and all the results and comments.
ITEM 3 - Transportation
Chairperson Anthony explained that the City Council needs to be given
information about what services SamTrans provides for the disabled senior
population. He said that previously, medical qualified trips had first
priority and now all requests are on a first come, first served basis.
He mentioned that the taxi program is now county-wide and will take patrons
into other counties and is no longer limited just to San Mateo County.
Chairperson Anthony said TRIPS has been combined with PCC as a result of
their success to improve paratransit service for the disabled.
Commissioner Lloyd is a member of the San Mateo County Commission on Aging
and on the Executive Committee and will continue to keep the Commission
advised of transportation issues relating to seniors.
ITEM 4 - New Red Morton Center
Superintendent Hartman explained the City Council voted on August 9 to
approve the new Red Morton Center project. The new center will be more
than 32,000 square feet in size and will include a full gymnasium and a
child care program for 60 children. The building will also include offices
which will be occupied by programming staff. The administrative staff will
remain at the Community Activities Building. Demolition of the old
building is due to occur in early 1994 but no date has been set. All plans
for this project have just been conceptual and final plans have not been
developed for the project. Bull, Stockwell and Allen of San Francisco will
be the project architects. In addition to this firm, two additional
consultants have been working on the project. One of the consulting firms
has been working on revenue projections for the new center to help make the
new center more self-supporting.
Chairperson Anthony felt the construction of a new Red Morton Center was
a good idea but expressed his concern about the parking available and felt
the City Council should be aware of this concern. Superintendent Hartman
said funds were approved for the new building and adjacent parking but did
not include the Myrtle Street lot or the lot next to the Armory, and that
staff was well aware of the parking problems. Commissioner Lloyd asked if
the development could include the possibility of underground parking.
Chairperson Anthony felt the Senior Affairs Commission whole heartedly
approved of the new Red Morton Center with two concerns: (1) parking; and
(2) allowing for future growth of the center, i.e. a second floor added to
the building.
ITEM 5 - Proposed Guest Speakers and Topics
Chairperson Anthony asked if the Commissioners had any suggestions of
future guest speakers at Commission meetings. It was suggested that
representatives from Kaiser and Aetna come to speak about insurance
coverage for seniors. It was also suggested having a representative from
HIP come to speak about housing alternatives for seniors. The
Commissioners suggested inviting the presidents from the different senior
clubs to these meetings so they could listen to the information and take it
back to their prospective clubs.
