ITEM 2 - Review of Recommendations Presented
Chairperson Anthony said the City Manager has suggested that the Commission
prepare an article for the quarterly Redwood City newsletter which is
delivered to all Redwood City households. He felt this would be especially
helpful to the "invisible" house-bound senior. The Commissioners agreed
that there is a need to identify those seniors who have little contact with
the community and the senior centers.
Executive Director Bransford said the 800 phone number for Information and
Referral for San Mateo County appears to be working well. People who call
get a real person on the line immediately who can then make the proper
referral. Outreach efforts are still needed because the Fair Oaks
Community Center is no longer able to do comprehensive assessments due to
budget cuts. She said the Peninsula Volunteers deliver meals for the
Center and these representatives will be given a senior newsletter to give
to meal recipients. She mentioned that the Fair Oaks Senior Center plans
to do some tele-marketing efforts very soon to help identify needy seniors
in the community. Executive Director Bransford mentioned the Area Agency
on Aging is seeing a decrease in the numbers of people at senior centers.
Supervisor Oliver said the topic of marketing senior centers is a popular
one at senior program coordinator meetings she attends. All senior centers
are interested in marketing their centers to increase attendance and notify
the senior population of programs offered. She also mentioned that the
number of seniors with drug and alcohol addiction is higher than any other
age group. She said Sequoia Hospital 's drug and alcoholic addiction
program is moving out into the community and she felt that senior centers
need to provide intervention during a person's participation in the
program.
Supervisor Oliver mentioned the Intergenerational Program is working with
the students in the program to determine what kids would like to learn to
do and also working with the parents to see what they would like their
child to learn. This program could teach the children skills such as
cooking, and other skills which are necessary in their lives.
Commissioner Lloyd mentioned putting the County I&R phone number on a
business card or sticker which could be placed on a telephone to assist
seniors. Commissioner Jordan suggested putting the phone number on a
magnet which could be placed on the refrigerator.
Chairperson Anthony felt that a "brainstorming session" could be held to
develop marketing strategies for both Redwood City senior centers.
Chairperson Anthony spoke about the follow up on the recommendations that
were presented to the City Council and asked about the future plans and
projections of the City. He suggested inviting the City Manager to our
January meeting to discuss the recommendations or having representatives
from the Commission visit the City Manager to discuss them.
ITEM 3 - Fox Theater Task Force
Chairperson Anthony spoke about the Fox Theater Task Force of which he is a
member. He reviewed that the City Council has contributed funds to the Fox
Theater in order to promote cultural activities in the downtown area. He
said the Fox Theater has actual performances during 35 days of the year and
is used for 42 weeks of the year, leaving 10 weeks to be used for other
events. He said he and other members of the Task Force are concerned about
