Senior Affairs Commission
Page 2
Commissioner Salinas submitted a preliminary report of underlying
reasons in favor of relocation of the nutrition program for
consideration by the Commission:
BENEFITS TO SENIOR COMMUNITY:
* Access to majority of senior services in Fair Oaks Area
(Nutrition, plus: Info & Referral Counseling, social events,
recreation, tax assistance, veterans assistance, etc.) all at one
location.
* Increased staff capability to serve more elders and serve them
better . Eliminate some duplication of card indexing. gave time in
staff communication.
* Increased access for frail elderly to receive and participate in
services and activities.
* Comfort and safety of frail elders during incl.ement'weather by
elimination of need to cross street for meals.
* Increased opportunity for elder community to cross cultural,
economic and education barriers to become united in goals and
purpose of senior center. Long range projection is that all elders
will be served better when commonalities are identified and
"differences" put in more positive perspective. More, creative
programs can be developed using expanded space of total senior
center building.
* Increased capability of raising funds due to "United Front"
image of elder community.
STATED CONCERNS OPPOSING RELOCATION OF NUTRITION PROGRAM:
* There Is inadequate parking acl{acent to senior center. At
present there are approx. 17 parking spaces available. Back lot
provides nine (9) ; side parking provides five (5) and street front
provides three (3) .
* Senior Center multipurpose room is too small to adquately serve
meals.
* There are too few fire exits at Senior Center. The building
isn't earthquake safe.
