Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday,March 14,2002
Manager Griffith noted that the City now has a public relations person on
staff who will be able to assist in advertising the luncheons by sending out
press releases to the newspapers. Commissioner M. Walsh requested that
several Commissioners volunteer to prepare the invitations for mailing. It
was suggested that postcards be used to notify participants about the
luncheon and they would call the Center to make reservations.
A copy of the luncheon mailing labels will be sent to the Commissioners for
their review. Please make any corrections or additions on the labels and
bring to the April meeting.
ITEM 2 - COMMITTEE WORKPLAN UPDATES
-Transportation
Commissioner Borgens apologized for not providing copies of minutes from a
November 28, 2001 Transportation Sub-Committee meeting to the
Commissioners. She noted that she made the error and it was not the fault
of staff.
Commissioner M. Walsh provided a copy of"Golden Wheels" newsletter from
SamTrans dated Summer 1992. She noted that transportation problems are
still the same as they were in 1992 and there has been no resolution to the
issues. Commissioner M. She said that Mr. Napiur of CCAG advised her that transportation
grants are available, but the City would have to match the grant, dollar for
dollar. Commissioner M. Walsh felt that since the City does not have funds
set aside for this purpose, it would not be advisable to pursue these grants.
She suggested the Commission meet with the City Council to discuss this
issue in depth.
Commissioner Carpe announced that as of March 1, 2002, the Health Plan of
San Mateo has eliminated its transportation program. The Health Plan of San
Mateo has a membership of 40,000 and previously allowed its members to
have free round trip taxi rides to go to medical appointments. Commissioner
Carpe has spoken to SamTrans because this will put more pressure on
SamTrans and RediWheels to pick up these people in need of transportation.
It was announced that SamTrans will increase its fares as of August 2002 and
that several routes have been eliminated.
Commissioner Grove asked if parking was still an issue at the Fair Oaks
Community Center and Susan Houston confirmed that it still is an issue. Ms.
Houston stated that Teri Chin has approached Costco and other local
businesses about leasing space in their parking lots, but Costco denied the
request. Ms. Houston noted that she will be meeting with Teri Chin after
today's Commission meeting to discuss the parking issue and hopefully, some
