Senior Affairs Commission Page 2
Minutes of Thursday,April 11,2002
ITEM 1 - HEALTHCARE SYMPOSIUM
Commissioner Grove reported that the Commissioners have agreed to
sponsor a symposium to give Redwood City seniors an opportunity to address
various lawmakers and officials about healthcare issues and concerns.
Members of the public would speak three to five minutes each. The
legislators would be invited to listen, not necessarily to respond. The
proposed date for the symposium is Saturday, September 21, 2002,
providing the designated officials are able to attend that day.
Commissioner Borgens stated that speakers might have immediate concerns
and may be frustrated if not given responses at that time. Manager Griffith
suggested that Veterans Memorial Senior Center staff and HICAP personnel
could be in attendance and provide information and assistance to people.
Commissioner M. Walsh suggested inviting the board of trustees of Sequoia
Hospital and perhaps a few doctors to attend. Susan Houston suggested
limiting the time of the symposium to morning only and providing Spanish
and sign language interpreters as well as refreshments. Commissioner Carpe
suggested pre-submittal of issues in writing prior to meeting and that event
be videotaped. Manager Griffith suggested that a stenographer record what
is said. The Commission on Aging of San Mateo County was mentioned a
possible collaborator in the project. After further discussion, the commission
agreed, six in favor and one abstention, to proceed with the symposium.
Commissioner Grove will draft a letter of invitation and list of invitees that will
include members of the press, hospitals, and city and county officials.
ITEM 2 - COMMITTEE WORKPLAN UPDATES
-Transportation
Commissioner M. Walsh reported that she still wants a local shuttle bus for
the City but funds are not available for it now. She will continue to pursue it.
Commissioner Carpe said that she would have more to report at next
meeting.
Manager Griffith reported that on June 3, 2002, a pilot transportation
collaboration between Kaiser Hospital and Veterans Memorial Senior Center
would begin. The VMSC van will pick up people with Kaiser appointments at
their home and bring them to the senior center. The Kaiser shuttle bus will
then pick them up at VMSC, bring them to Kaiser for their appointment and
then back to the senior center. The VMSC van will then take them home.
We are thinking that this service will be available on Mondays and Thursdays.
The initial focus will be on morning appointments. A criterion is currently
being developed. Commissioner Borgens will investigate a complaint
regarding the Sequoia Hospital shuttle service.
