GROVE
Commissioner Grove reported that she spoke with Mayor Dick Claire and he,
on behalf of the rest of City Council, supports the idea of having the
Healthcare Symposium at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center on Saturday,
September 21, 2002. He also agreed to co-sign a letter to public officials
with Chairperson Harrison, in joint sponsorship of the symposium. Mayor
Claire also suggested that since healthcare is a federal issue, that federal
officials be contacted and made aware of the assistance the Symposium
could provide them. Commissioner Grove sent e-mails to Anna Eshoo and
Barbara Boxer and requested contact lists from them of people to invite from
appropriate federal agencies and Medicare. Manager Griffith reported that
Malcolm Smith would assist with press releases when all particulars of the
symposium are in place.
Commissioner Grove requested that the letter to Mr. Ahern be sent again in
hope of receiving a reply before the June meeting. Administrative Clerk Bede
will re-send the letter.
Commissioner Grove is planning that, at the symposium, 90 minutes each
will be assigned for outpatient services, inpatient services and in home care
issues. The public would be scheduled in 10 minutes time slots to voice their
concerns. The politicians and healthcare professionals in attendance could
ask questions but would not be expected to offer solutions at this time.
Interpreters and translators will be planned. Informational materials will be
available during the symposium. Speakers will sign up in advance, perhaps
in July and August. Speakers may be provided assistance with their advance
preparation. Commissioners Grove and Harrison will work together on a
letter to be sent to public officials regarding the symposium.
M/S Grove/Moran: To approve the Healthcare Symposium sub-
committee sending letters of invitation to public officials, public
sector employees and others deemed appropriate, requesting their
participation in September 21, 2002 Healthcare Symposium.
Motion passed.
