Senior Affairs Commission Page 2 <br /> Minutes of Thursday, November 14,2002 <br /> ITEM 2 - ORIENTATION LUNCHEON - NOVEMBER 22, 2003 <br /> Commissioner L. Walsh announced that seniors from Mt. Carmel Church will <br /> be attending an orientation luncheon at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center <br /> on November 22, 2002 and hopes to schedule more such events for other <br /> groups in area. Discussion followed about establishing an ongoing monthly <br /> outreach program. Commissioner Carpe inquired about such a program at <br /> Fair Oaks Senior Center. Zena Vigileo will send monthly FOSC information to <br /> VMSC for distribution and consider initiating a similar program there. <br /> Commissioner M. Walsh inquired whether participants bought or were <br /> provided with lunches after their tours. Funds are not available to provide <br /> meals without charge. Participants are invited to join in the daily lunch <br /> program with the purchase of $3.50 lunch ticket, as stated in the invitation. <br /> ITEM 3 — SPEAKER MEETINGS FOR 2003 <br /> Commissioner L. Walsh suggested inviting Mayor Claire as the first guest <br /> speaker of 2003. February dates were considered. Commissioner Graf <br /> suggested the possibility of speaker meetings. Commissioner L. Walsh will <br /> send a letter of invitation to Mayor Claire on the Commission's behalf. <br /> ITEM 4 - COMMITTEE WORKPLAN UPDATES <br /> -Transportation <br /> Manager Griffith reported that City Council approved the purchase of a new <br /> van for the Veterans Memorial Senior Center in 2003. The mini van will be <br /> turned in to the City's vanpool. Trade-in value plus several thousands of <br /> dollars will be allotted for a new van. The current VMSC van will be used for <br /> Kids Club. <br /> Commissioner Grove reported that Wells Fargo Bank has ten to twelve <br /> thousand dollars in grant funding that may be available for other senior <br /> needs. <br /> Manager Griffith also reported that the transportation survey showed that <br /> 219 people responded. Of those, 186 were between the ages of 50 and 90+ <br /> years. 120 of the 186 needed assistance with transportation. <br /> Commissioner M. Walsh reported that she is keeping the shuttle idea active <br /> in communications with Dave Nelson and Diane Howard. <br /> -Housing <br /> Commissioner M. Walsh inquired if a response had been received from the <br /> Commission's letter sent earlier this year regarding the need for affordable <br /> senior housing in the City. Commissioner Grove recommended sending a <br /> stronger letter if no reply was received. Manager Griffith will contact past <br /> Commissioner Janet Borgens as to whether she may have received follow up <br /> information. <br />
