SENIOR AFFAIRS COMMISSION <br />MINUTES OF THURSDAY, OCTOBER 13, 2016 <br /> <br />COMMISSIONERS PRESENT: Chair Draeger, Commissioners Britschgi, James, Jones, Paley and Turk <br />COMMISSIONERS ABSENT: Vice Chair Cooperman <br />STAFF PRESENT: PRCS Manager Bruce Utecht & Administrative Clerk Kathy Bede <br />GUEST PRESENT: Susan Houston, Peninsula Family Service and Laura Swartzel, Fair Oaks Adult Activity <br />Center <br />The regular meeting of the Senior Affairs Commission was called to order by Chair Draeger at 1:00 p.m. <br />at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, 1455 Madison Avenue, Redwood City, California. <br />APPROVAL OF MINUTES: The minutes of the September 8, 2016 SAC meeting were approved as <br />written. <br />ITEM 1 – 70 Strong – Susan Houston <br /> <br />Susan began by stating the Peninsula Family Service provides a variety of services to older adults <br />including a peer counseling program and transition of care services which helps people adjust from <br />hospital to home. <br />70 Strong is the newest program. It is a no cost Sequoia Healthcare District program to assist older <br />adults find services and activities in the community. It serves residents of Atherton, Belmont, Portola <br />Valley, Redwood City, Redwood Shores, San Carlos, Woodside and parts of Foster City, Menlo Park and <br />San Mateo. Ages 70 – 79 are times of major life changes. 70 Strong helps individuals find support <br />groups, hospitals, volunteer opportunities, community clinics, food services, enrichment classes, home <br />care, housing, transportation and social groups. 70 Strong can be contacted online at <br />www.70Strong.org or by phone at (650) 780-7547. Community Navigators can also be met in person, by <br />appointment, at a 70 Strong location or an at home visit. 70 Strong is a resource guide for aging well in <br />the community. <br /> <br />ITEM 2 – Commissioners’ Reports <br /> <br />Commissioner Jones reported that Fair Oaks continues to provide lunches and healthy breakfasts, stress <br />management classes, yoga classes, sit and fit classes, soul line dancing, tai chi and gardening. Two <br />parties are held each month. A Halloween party is planned for Oct. 27th. She also reported that Fair <br />Oaks is receiving donations of scarves for the ‘Chase the Chill’ program. <br /> <br />Commissioner Britschgi reported that the new Heron sculpture at the port was dedicated Oct. 13th <br />followed by dinner at Pizza & Pints. Art Redwood City is doing great things, including utility boxes. The <br />Senior Affairs Commission’s part of the Sesquicentennial events next year, is to plan a picnic. Laura <br />Swartzel volunteered to help with the Veterans Memorial Senior Center and Fair Oaks joint picnic. <br />
