Page 2 <br /> <br />Commissioner Turk reported that she attended the San Jose Walk to End Alzheimer’s. There were about <br />3,500 people in attendance. The San Francisco Walk had somewhat fewer attendees. Each Walk raised <br />about $1.2 million. The Walks are held all over the country and the California chapters always have a <br />very high turnout. She will meet with Bruce and Chris about working on a new scoping study. <br /> <br />Commissioner Paley reported that the Pizza & Pints event on Oct. 13th is to benefit CATA, a new <br />organization, Community Advocacy Through Art, which promotes public art with a purpose of social <br />awareness. CATA benefits are held every Thursday night. The public is invited to paint a canvas. All <br />proceeds will go to CATA. She also reported that there are 7 ‘Chase the Chill’ collection sites throughout <br />the community. They are the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, Fair Oaks Community Center, the <br />Community Activities Building, the Downtown Library, Redwood Shores Library, City Hall and Stuff on <br />the Square. The donation bins will be collected October 24th. The scarves will be tagged in English and <br />Spanish saying, ‘If you want me, take me. If you need me, take me.’ and then distributed in November <br />in various locations. The tentative distribution sites include Red Morton Park, Fair Oaks courtyards <br />between buildings, Courthouse Square, the park by the library, maybe by City Hall, the green triangle by <br />Grocery Outlet, the street ministries that provide dinners at Middlefield across from Tapestry Church, <br />near the Redwood Shores library and other locations. <br />Commissioner Paley also reported on The Friends of the VMSC meeting. Wednesday night and Sunday <br />bingo support the VMSC nutrition program. Wednesday night bingo attendance has been declining. <br />There is now discussion of perhaps ending bingo on Wednesday evenings and instead having both <br />morning and afternoon bingo on Sundays. <br /> <br />Commissioner James attended the Complete Streets Commission meeting regarding the Farm Hill pilot <br />program. They have studied the project for the past year and are going to recommend to Council that <br />the changes remain permanent. He has been attending the Active Aging exercise classes offered by <br />Adaptive PE program at the VMSC is very impressed the staff and the program. He also reported that <br />Commissioner Cooperman and he met with Redwood Shores Community Association members. They <br />introduced themselves as Senior Affairs Commissioners, explained their roles and volunteered their <br />services. The Association would like to survey their community through their publication, ‘The Pilot’. <br />The Commissioners offered to help and left a copy of the VMSC Guide with them. He stated that the <br />Shores residents spoke with frustration at feeling neglected. They cited interesting population figures <br />with a higher percentage of seniors at the Shores than the percentage in central Redwood City as an <br />argument for more services. When asked what services they wanted or what their interests were, or <br />what they were interested in creating, the reply was that anything like in the VMSC Guide would work. <br />Commissioners Cooperman & James explained that they are volunteers and they can merely advise <br />Council. The Commissioners hope to hear more from the Redwood Shores Community Association and <br />offer whatever assistance they can. Commissioner James shared the Association’s contact information <br />was with Susan Houston because it seems the seniors in Redwood Shores could benefit from 70 Strong. <br /> <br />Chair Draeger stated that his interest is with the scoping study and asked Bruce to report with and <br />update. Bruce reported that the contract with David J. Power as CEQA consultant goes to Council on <br />Oct. 17th. He also stated that Wider Circle will make presentations to the Friends of the VMSC and the <br />Senior Affairs Commission in November to review the data from last year’s internet survey and then
