Page 2

Commissioner Turk reported that she attended the San Jose Walk to End Alzheimer’s. There were about
3,500 people in attendance. The San Francisco Walk had somewhat fewer attendees. Each Walk raised
about $1.2 million. The Walks are held all over the country and the California chapters always have a
very high turnout. She will meet with Bruce and Chris about working on a new scoping study.

Commissioner Paley reported that the Pizza & Pints event on Oct. 13th is to benefit CATA, a new
organization, Community Advocacy Through Art, which promotes public art with a purpose of social
awareness. CATA benefits are held every Thursday night. The public is invited to paint a canvas. All
proceeds will go to CATA. She also reported that there are 7 ‘Chase the Chill’ collection sites throughout
the community. They are the Veterans Memorial Senior Center, Fair Oaks Community Center, the
Community Activities Building, the Downtown Library, Redwood Shores Library, City Hall and Stuff on
the Square. The donation bins will be collected October 24th. The scarves will be tagged in English and
Spanish saying, ‘If you want me, take me. If you need me, take me.’ and then distributed in November
in various locations. The tentative distribution sites include Red Morton Park, Fair Oaks courtyards
between buildings, Courthouse Square, the park by the library, maybe by City Hall, the green triangle by
Grocery Outlet, the street ministries that provide dinners at Middlefield across from Tapestry Church,
near the Redwood Shores library and other locations.
Commissioner Paley also reported on The Friends of the VMSC meeting. Wednesday night and Sunday
bingo support the VMSC nutrition program. Wednesday night bingo attendance has been declining.
There is now discussion of perhaps ending bingo on Wednesday evenings and instead having both
morning and afternoon bingo on Sundays.

Commissioner James attended the Complete Streets Commission meeting regarding the Farm Hill pilot
program. They have studied the project for the past year and are going to recommend to Council that
the changes remain permanent. He has been attending the Active Aging exercise classes offered by
Adaptive PE program at the VMSC is very impressed the staff and the program. He also reported that
Commissioner Cooperman and he met with Redwood Shores Community Association members. They
introduced themselves as Senior Affairs Commissioners, explained their roles and volunteered their
services. The Association would like to survey their community through their publication, ‘The Pilot’.
The Commissioners offered to help and left a copy of the VMSC Guide with them. He stated that the
Shores residents spoke with frustration at feeling neglected. They cited interesting population figures
with a higher percentage of seniors at the Shores than the percentage in central Redwood City as an
argument for more services. When asked what services they wanted or what their interests were, or
what they were interested in creating, the reply was that anything like in the VMSC Guide would work.
Commissioners Cooperman & James explained that they are volunteers and they can merely advise
Council. The Commissioners hope to hear more from the Redwood Shores Community Association and
offer whatever assistance they can. Commissioner James shared the Association’s contact information
was with Susan Houston because it seems the seniors in Redwood Shores could benefit from 70 Strong.

Chair Draeger stated that his interest is with the scoping study and asked Bruce to report with and
update. Bruce reported that the contract with David J. Power as CEQA consultant goes to Council on
Oct. 17th. He also stated that Wider Circle will make presentations to the Friends of the VMSC and the
Senior Affairs Commission in November to review the data from last year’s internet survey and then
