Page 2 <br /> <br />ITEM 5 – Commissioner’s Reports <br />Commissioner James stated that he is an advocate for bicyclists and pedestrians and a road safety <br />monitor. He attended a Cal-Trans meeting at City Hall regarding a toll lane on highway 101. He also <br />attended Sandy Cooperman’s farewell luncheon, the disabilities film festival and the volunteer <br />appreciation luncheon all at the Veterans Memorial Senior Center. He also commented that Native <br />Americans were not included in the sesquicentennial celebration. Bruce commented that there was a <br />Native American playing drums at the sesquicentennial event. <br /> <br />Commissioner Britschgi stated that she served 8 years on the Civic Cultural Commission and has served 9 <br />or 10 years on the Seniors Affairs Commission. She has lived in Redwood City for many years. She is <br />involved with the Arts in Redwood City and was recently very busy with the flower extravaganza for the <br />City’s sesquicentennial celebration. <br /> <br />Commissioner Jones reported that the Fair Oaks Adult Activity Center has a new art class, exercise <br />classes, offers breakfast and lunch, gardening on Fridays and trips to the farmers market with <br />transportation provided by the VMSC van. <br /> <br />Commissioner Turk stated that she has now been a member of the Senior Affairs Commission for one <br />year and has lived in Redwood City for four and a half years. She has worked with the Alzheimer’s <br />Association for some time. She also stated that she’s had a difficult time attending the HHCC meetings <br />due to time or date changes or cancellations. She also reported that her child’s preschool class had <br />visited with seniors living at Devonshire Oaks. <br /> <br />Vice Chair Paley commented that the Mother’s Day Tea at the VMSC was great. She stated her <br />involvement with Arts Redwood City public art outreach. She informed that there are 2 art workshops <br />at the VMSC this summer. One is cyanotype which capturing sun shadows on paper. The other is paper <br />making. There will be 2 other art workshops in the fall on bookmaking. She reported that 20 artists <br />were at the Sesquicentennial Art on the Square event. The first Art on the Square show this year is on <br />June 9th. Dragon Theater is having a casino night on June 17th. Vice Chair Paley also reported that she <br />and Chair Draeger were involved in the selection of ELS as the architectural firm for the new center. No <br />design plans have decided yet. The EIR report is pending. There will be a community meeting in the fall. <br />Ground breaking will hopefully happen in 2019. <br /> <br />STAFF UPDATES – VETERANS MEMORIAL SENIOR CENTER <br />Bruce stated that there will not be a Senior Affairs Commission meeting in July. The next meeting will be <br />August 10, 2017. He also reported that - <br />• June 13th is senior day at the San Mateo County Fair. He and other staff attended to promote <br />the VMSC. <br />• June 30th is the 4th of July celebration barbeque at the center. <br />• August 26th is the Fisher House Fundraiser with representatives from Fisher House, the Blue Star <br />Moms and the Red Cross. There will also be bagpipes. Last year $5,000 was raised. They hope <br />to raise the same amount or more this year.
