negatively impacting the City's quality of life. He urged for a Redwood City elected
official to be proactive and monitor the jail building discussions.
One Council Member addressed Mr. Johnson and stated that the article mentioned in
the newspaper omitted important details. Furthermore, he felt that after reading the
staff report and speaking with Dr. Bell item 7.1 G made sense. He asked Dr. Bell to
repeat what he mentioned to him. Dr. Bell said that the proposed jail will have a 20-inch
sewer pipe, which will help the infrastructure needs of the community of the Inner
Harbor area. Moreover, when the county looked at the site and did mitigation, it
exceeded their budget. Therefore those two items were the drivers that brought the
County to ask for the City's help. The same Council Member said that he appreciated
the City not having to pay for the cost of the pipeline.
Another Council Member said she received phone calls about this item (7.1 G) and had
shared the concerns with the public. She said that there are many ways in which the
City partners with the County and it is important to continue that relationship.
Furthermore, she said the County had originally asked for a substantially larger amount,
so this is an opportunity for the City to work with the County. She also encourages the
County and City try to market the good things about this project. One other Council
Member agreed with her colleagues and thanked Dr. Bell for pulling 7.1A. She looks
forward to future communication, and she said that she will be abstaining on item 7.2A.
Vice Mayor Foust said that she and Nancy Radcliffe had sat on the Advisory Committee
regarding the new jail. She said that her role was to be a vetting point and she
advocated for additional programs. She thanked Lt. Buson who runs the committee.
Another Council Member commented on the flooding items on the agenda and how he
is excited that the City is making progress. He said that the staff had been working hard
to get funding for the mitigation planning. Dr. Bell announced that the City has received
funding of about $3 million. The Council Member said that the flooding has been an
ongoing issue for several years and opined that there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Mayor Gee said that there is another grant for $1 million. He added that altogether the
grants are for$4 million and that is exciting.
Motion carried 7-0 by electronic vote and Council Member Howard abstaining on
7.2.A.
1.
