back for discussion. He envisions this being a five year plan. He offered to take
questions from the City Council and one Council Member requested a summary of the
SWOT analysis. One Council Member inquired if we need to allocate resources and
ponder what we want to do in terms of services levels. This Council Member wanted to
have projections and appreciated the information and the work from the organization.
A Council Member inquired about the EDT (Economic Development Team) having
discussions with car dealers and how to keep them here. Another Council Member
thanked Dr. Bell for his work and loves the pictures that are displayed up around the
Council Chambers and he would like the pictures to stay up. He also wants to celebrate
and focus on the new needs due to the state takeaways and the need to manage and
sustain our successes. He does not want to overlook older infrastructure and he is
looking forward to celebrating and also making it be sustainable.
Vice Mayor Foust inquired if there has been analysis on what each job requires and
how to train locally. Dr. Bell said that we have to be careful about preferential
treatment. Vice Mayor Foust noted that the community colleges are doing more
certificate programs —with Deputy Sector Navigators and she believes that this is a
good opportunity. Dr. Bell noted that he had developed an outreach program with
career counselors in San Mateo County, along with the local colleges, and the city
hosted a career counselor forum as part of their training consortium and how that was a
good initiative. Another Council Member noted that earlier on the Consent Calendar,
there was the use of Grants and the example of Triple AAA providing a check tonight,
and she hopes this upward trend continues with staff constantly looking for opportunities
and for the public to consider stepping up and contributing.
Vice Mayor Foust commented that she often hears about staff and how professional
they are. She said thank you to staff and especially Dr. Bell for his work and leadership.
Vice Mayor Foust said that there are a lot of challenges but there are a lot of
possibilities, and she spoke about partnerships.
Mayor Gee summarized by saying that the images around the Chambers are a fraction
of what has been accomplished. He also added that the needs of the community will
change with population growth in the rate of 8 or 9 percent with different service needs.
He noted that we grew up with the notion that if you have a home, it is the American
dream realized, but the younger generation does not want to give up their freedom and
may prefer to rent instead. Mayor Gee thanked staff and the Executive Team for all
they do every day to build community together and spoke of the importance of being
nimble and flexible as we move forward into a new world and paradigm.
9.
