She had questions about the
MidPeninsula and City Center Plaza's partnership and inquired about changing the
agreement in any way. She shared her ideas around Below Market Rate units that
would bring in people and then when they move how to allow others to have that
opportunity to move in their place. This same Council Member wondered when would
be a good time to have a conversation with MidPeninsula, and possibly discuss a
sunset clause or succession planning. Ms. Coffman replied that staff could have that
conversation now.
Again the same Council Member raised another issue with MidPeninsula in that there
should be a conversation including the City Manager about parking at City Hall, in that
parking spots are taken by people who live in the complex. She is advocating freeing
up spaces for handicap or those going to City Council meetings. Lastly, the Council
Member asked what the acronym CHODO was. Ms. Coffman said that it stood for
Community Housing Development Organization, which is a specific nonprofit that has a
Board to produce more affordable housing.
Another Council Member said she was excited to see the new housing projects. She
asked Ms. Coffman how the City could do more to partner with organizations to find
more sites for affordable housing. Ms. Coffman answered that they partner (with
organizations) all year round to find this. She mentioned the difficulties, because land
prices are increasing, so she was very happy to have identified a site in the downtown
area.
Mayor Gee thanked Ms. Coffman and Chair Wright and Housing and Human Concerns
Committee member for the hard work. He opened the Public Hearing.
Public Comment
Ann Marquart, Executive Director of Project Sentinel, thanked Council for past years of
support. She said they provide fair housing in Redwood City and noted that they are
usually able to help resolve most conflicts through education, facilitation and
negotiation. She thanked the housing providers for being cooperative and helpful.
Barbara Liedtke, with HIP Housing, thanked the City Council for its support. She
mentioned that landlords are raising their rents and that they work to keep hope alive by
helping those who wish to stay in the area with home sharing as an option.
Elena Houser, a member of Rebuilding Together Peninsula, mentioned that it was easy
for her to find a home through HIP Housing after moving out of the State to California.
She congratulated HIP Housing for their work in helping get a home.
Luis Vizcardo works with Renaissance and they help people start new businesses or
develop a business.
