7.1.C. - Page 1
REPORT
To the Honorable Mayor and City Council
From the City Manager
September 8, 2014
SUBJECT
Redwood City Education Foundation's 2014 OktobeRun
RECOMMENDATION
Authorize execution of a letter permit for the annual Redwood City Education
Foundation's "OktobeRun".
BACKGROUND
The Redwood City Education Foundation ("Foundation") has held a half marathon and 5
kilometer (5K) run in Redwood City annually in October since 2011. These runs were
previously held in conjunction with the Oktoberfest in the downtown area with the start
and finish lines next to the festival. This year the Foundation has applied to move the
start/finish line to Seaport Court to be held in conjunction with PortFest at the Port of
Redwood City on October 4th, 2014.
ANALYSIS
The Foundation's desire to continue the tradition of an annual half marathon and 5K
known as the fun run will continue to generate interest in the health and fitness of
Redwood City residents. The event is a fundraiser for the Redwood City Education
Foundation. The Foundation has been working since 1983 to advance and enrich
educational opportunities for the 9,200 students of the Redwood City School District.
It is anticipated that upwards of 2000 runners will participate in the OktobeRun this year.
The OktobeRun will start and finish on Seaport Court in conjunction with PortFest
activities occurring at the same time. The combination of the Oktoberun and the
PortFest will further the City's interest in promoting a vibrant Port area.
On October 4th, 2014 at 8.00 a.m. the half marathon will start on Seaport Court and
head eastbound on Seaport Blvd to northbound Blomquist St. turn onto northbound
Maple St, proceed through Docktown Marina, over the Bridge to Nowhere, east on Bair
Island Road until connecting to the Bay Trail. The runners will run through San Carlos
until connecting again with the Bay Trail surrounding the Redwood Shores community.
Runners will turn around and retrace their steps back to the finish line at Seaport Court.
