Commissioner Weintraub indicated that she felt this program would be
a good stepping stone for the students so that when the students reached
high school , they would be more used to , and hopefully enjoy , the idea
of participation .
Commissioner Anderson inquired about insurance for the students . Mr .
Paulson indicated that the insurance that the City has now for the
Department ' s existing programs would also cover this program . Com-
missioner Anderson then inquired if the special excursions would be
paid for by the students . Mr , Paulson indicated that the students
would pay for the trips , but that the school district would probably
agree to putting in some transportation costs to support the program .
He also indicated that the funding for the program could possibly be
revenue sharing funds . This would be proposed as part of the forth -
coming budget for fiscal year 77 -78 ,
Commissioner Hayes inquired as to who would pay for any damages that
occurred during the programs that would be held at the school . Mr ,
Weeks indicated that since the program was a joint effort , the school
district would pay for the damages , It is quite possible , however ,
that there would be joint payments depending upon the circumstances .
Commissioner Anderson inquired if a bi - lingual specialist would be
hired . Mr . Paulson indicated that the Department would try to hire
either a bi -linguist or a person with a comprehensive knowledge of
minority groups ,
COMMISSIONER WEINTRAUB LEFT AT 8 : 36 p , m .
Mr . Weeks indicated that the School Board as well as the Council had
not , as yet , seen the proposed plan ; only the school district staff
and the Department staff had worked on the plan , Mr . Paulson indi -
cated that he was concerned about choosing Hoover because of the lack
of parental involvement at the school , He indicated that making the
program successful at Hoover would not be an easy task , but that it
would be very worthwhile for the City and the community if it is suc -
cessful . Mr . Weeks felt that cooperation and attitude of those involved
would be the foundation of whether or not the program succeeds or fails .
Mr . Paulson indicated that the Program Committee would be kept involved
in the activities of the proposed pilot program , At the close of the
discussion , the following motion was made :
MOTION : Commissioner Schlesinger moved that the Commission
accept and support the Proposed Pilot Junior High
School Recreation Program , seconded by Commissioner
Anderson , The motion carried unanimously by voice
vote .
-2-
