RECREATION DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
APRIL 1977
CENTER OPERATIONS & SPECIAL INTEREST CLASSES
Spring special interest classes began during the week of April 11 . In
spite of a slow start , class registration seemed to pick up after the
first week and as a result only one class was cancelled . Tumbling for
children seems to have become very popular and more classes have had
to be added .
The Veterans Building reports a successful Friends of the Library Book
Sale on April 1 , 2 and 3 . An organ recital by Ken Morris was held on
April 15 . No wedding receptions were booked in April and only one is
booked for May . Upcoming events for May include the Flower and Art
Show on May 12 , 13 , 14 & 15 and Redwood City Community Theater ' s "Under
the Yum Yum Tree " on May 20 , 21 , 27 , 28 , June 3 and 4 .
A number of wedding receptions were scheduled at the Community Activities
Building during the month of April .
The Department along with the Civic Cultural Commission and the San
Mateo Arts Council has sponsored a very successful Operalunch series
downtown at Hamilton and Broadway on Fridays at lunchtime on April 15 ,
22 , 29 and May 6 . The weekly attendance has been over 200 each time
and the program seems to be extremely well received by the public .
The GUIDE program had several interesting and successful programs in
April . The group had a tour of the San Mateo County Sheriff ' s Depart-
ment and the San Francisco Airport at Pan American and last week they
went to the Fair Oaks Community Center for sessions at the library and
with a representative from the telephone company .
Red Morton Center
On April 1 , a Junior High Dance was held at the Center with over 300
students attending . Music was provided by KFRC . The only mishap
occurred when someone called in saying there was a bomb in the build-
ing . The Center was evacuated for half an hour while the Fire Depart-
ment checked the facility . Nothing was found and the dance continued .
Needless to say it was an interesting as well as enjoyable evening .
The March of Dimes Walkathon was held on April 2 with staff , teens. and
senior volunteers arriving at 6 : 30 a . m . Participants started arriving
at 7 : 30 a . m . and at 8 : 00 a . m . , 1 ,800 walkers started the march toward
Alameda de las Pulgas . Donnie & Marie Osmond arrived at 9 : 30 to sign
autographs for the teens and seniors . They then proceeded along the
route to meet many of the anxiously awaiting walkers . The walkers
began to return to the Center around 2 : 00 p . m . and at 5 : 30 p . m . , the
- 9 -
