PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
APRIL 1977
The Park Division personnel were again engaged in the annual clean up and
preparation of the Easter Bowl area for the Annual Easter Sunrise Services .
In addition to preparing the area , they also assisted in providing the
piano , tables , chairs and public address system for the event .
The daily maintenance and field preparations of the softball fields at
Red Morton Park and Hawes Park is now underway . In addition to the regu -
lar play during the month of April three softball tournaments were held
which required the use of these facilities . It should be noted that
resultant from the water shortage , the infield areas of the softball
diamonds are not being sprinkled as is usually the custom . This is
resulting in a rather dusty situation on the fields and the playing sur-
face might become a little too loose . The only areas where water is
occassionaily applied is at home plate and the pitcher ' s mound together
with the other bases depending upon the situation .
Vacancies within the street tree crew together with recent equipment
problems have resulted in a back log of work orders for tree maintenance .
Crews continue with their efforts in order to catch up with the work
requests so that the day to day requests for services can be handled
promptly . Tree planting orders continue to be taken and filed for
future scheduling at such time as the planting moratorium is removed .
Park Supervisor Griffiths has completed the first section of the Water
Management Program dealing primarily with the Redwood Shores area . This
study will be the basis of a water management plan which in time can be
applied to all of the park areas . The study will also be used for basic
instruction to the park crews relative to soils , soil moisture , photo -
synthesis , and other physiological relationships so as to provide an
insight into the various specific problems presented in the park areas .
An extensive amount of field data is being collected relative to speci -
fic park areas which will be utilized by management and field personnel
in helping to conserve and utilize the water resources more effectively .
The Redwood Shores crew is already applying various experimental methods
and procedures in order to reduce the water consumption in that area .
Much of what is learned through this experimentation can also be applied
in other park areas .
On April 12 , Park Supervisor Hernandez , Park Leader Kitajima and Gardener
Caretaker Krohn attended a morning seminar held in San Jose for the intro -
duction of certain new and more efficient chemicals available in the mar-
ket now for weed and pest control . Also , Supervisor Hernandez successfully
completed a two-day management course dealing with labor relations which
was held at the Veterans Memorial Building and presented by the Inter Gov -
ernmental Management Development Institute .
-8 -
