and dysphasic children are all involved in the special needs program .
The dysphasic program was held two days a week with 80- 100 children
being served and the physically handicapped and educatable mentally
retarded children ' s programs were held on Saturdays .
In 1975 , the Redwood City Elementary School District , which was paying
for half of the program ' s budget , withdrew their portion so the program
has been operating on a $ 1 , 000 budget per school year . The leadership
and program activities had to be shortened to work with the budget . The
budget for fiscal year 1976 -77 has been expended and the program is now
awaiting next year ' s budget . Ms . Kucala indicated that she has asked
for a $2500 operating budget which would include the re -hiring of the
part- time dysphasic leader .
She also indicated to the Commission that there would be a " Games Day "
for the handicapped on May 21st . Mr . Weeks felt that the Commissioners
should try to attend and lend their support and assist wherever possible .
Ms . Kucala introduced Paul Wirthlin who has helped out with the physically
handicapped programs including the bowling program at Mel ' s Bowl . Mr .
Wirthlin indicated that the bowling league has been going on for 3 years .
Participants have grown from 2 to 35 . He briefly discussed the Ready
Wheels program which is a bus that picks up handicapped people at their
homes and takes them to the doctor or the hospital and then returns them
to their home . He hoped that the program would expand to include shop-
ping trips .
Commissioner Buckhout inquired if Mr . Wirthlin had any complaints about
the accessibility of the park areas for the handicapped . Mr . Wirthlin
felt that ramps were desperately needed . Mr . Weeks indicated that one
ramp has been placed at the Community Activities Building and that six
ramps were to be installed at the Veterans Memorial Building . Construc -
tion estimates are currently being investigated by the Safety Engineer ,
Adam Gee , of the Public Works Department .
Chairperson Pound thanked Ms . Kucala and Mr . Wirthlin for attending the
meeting .
AGENDA ITEM 1 . Proposed Park Naming - Redwood Shores
Mr . Weeks reviewed the proposed names for the parks in the Redwood Shores
area . Following discussion , the following names were proposed for the
parks in the Redwood Shores area :
1 .
