PARKS DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
AUGUST 1977
The Forty-Niner field was prepared for use by the Forty-Niners which commenced
the third week of August . The work included the renovation of the field
together with erecting the portable fencing and covering the fence with canvas
and burlap .
Turf renovation became necessary at the Belmont School site to prepare the
area for the soccer season . Drought stress , together with extreme use ,
resulted in the loss of approximately 50% of the field and , therefore ,
renovation became necessary . The field will be available for use around
the 1st of October .
Nearly all of the turf areas in both the north and south maintenance districts
were treated with herbicide in order to gain greater control of weed growth in
the weakened turf areas . Since most of the turf areas are under stress for
adequate water , infestations of Broadleaf weeds have been taking place . The
efforts to remove and control this weed infestation will help to eliminate the
competition between the weeds and the turf for available water .
In that the softball season is nearly over , the athletic field maintenance
crew has initiated the preparation of the various fields for the soccer and
football season which is due to commence on September 10 .
As was the case last month , drought stress injuries and associated effects
continue to be the major problem facing the Forestry section maintenance
personnel . During the month of August , the Forestry section personnel not
only removed a large number of dead or dying trees , but were also faced with
the necessity of severe pruning of many trees to remove the heavily defoliated
branches from the upper portions of the trees . Drought stress injuries have
been particularly evident on Magnolia , Modesto Ash and Liquid Amber species .
On request of the Public Works Department in preparation for the annual
street seal coating program , the Forestry crews pruned street trees on Lyons ,
Ebener , and King Streets . Additionally , the crews completed the systematic
pruning of the Modesto Ash trees in the 1700 , 1800 and 1900 blocks of Woodside
Road .
Park Supervisor Peter Griffiths and Park Leader James Littlefield attended
a training program on the recognition of Dutch Elm Disease which was conducted
by the Agricultural Commissioners ' Office of San Mateo County in cooperation
with the California Department of Food and Agriculture . The first case of
Dutch Elm Disease in San Mateo County was discovered in Hillsborough in early
August and was confirmed by the state on August 9 , 1977 .
-9-
