PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION
MINUTES OF AUGUST 10 , 1977
The regular meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission was called to
order by Chairman Schlesinger at 7 : 38 p . m . , in Conference Room 1 of the
Community Activities Building , 1400 Roosevelt Avenue , Redwood City .
MEMBERS PRESENT : Commissioners Anderson , Buckhout , Pound , Schlesinger
MEMBERS ABSENT : Commissioners Hayes , Knecht , Weintraub
STAFF PRESENT : Max C . Weeks , Parks & Recreation Director
Bill Paulson , Recreation Superintendent
Priscilla Mosher , Recreation Center Supervisor
Bob Heavey , Program Coordinator
MOTION : Commissioner Buckhout moved to accept the minutes
of the July 13 , 1977 , Regular Business Meeting ,
seconded by Commissioner Pound . The motion
carried unanimously by voice vote .
AGENDA ITEM 1 . Review of Recreation Center Teen Activities.
Mr . Weeks introduced Ms . Priscilla Mosher , Red Morton Recreation Center
Supervisor , and Mr . Bob Heavey , Program Coordinator . Mr . Weeks indicated
that Ms . Mosher has been handling most of the teen activities at the Center
along with their activities at different schools in the community .
Ms . Mosher gave a brief history of the program and the teen program objec-
tive as established in 1974 . In order to initiate the program , she and
Mr . Heavey went to different schools and agencies with questionnaires to
discover the needs of the teens . This questionnaire gave them direction
when they began structuring the programming .
She observed that when the program started in 1974 , the activities were
mostly the traditional ones ( trips , recreation nights , and dances ) . An
interest in a volunteer program also developed .
The following year , the Center added some special interest classes to the
prograiuuing ( backpack class and trip , ceramics , jewelry classes ) , along
with community service activities . These activities included : visiting
the schools at noon time ; starting a TCK ( Taking Care of Kids ) Clinic ,
which involved training teens to become babysitters and using the Center
as a referral center for the sitters ; starting a structured volunteer pro-
gram ; starting a GUIDE program for Latino students , which involved career
development ; and becoming involved in the March of Dimes Walkathon .
- 1 -
