Impacts will be less than significant. <br /> c) Less than Significant Impact. Paleontological resources consist of the fossilized remains of plants and animals, <br /> including vertebrates (animals with backbones), and invertebrates (e.g., starfish, clams, ammonites, and marine <br /> coral). The age and abundance of fossils depend on the topography and geological formations of the region of <br /> interest. In general, most fossils in the San Francisco Peninsula are found along the immediate Pacific Ocean <br /> coastline, and in locations within the outcropping marine units in the Santa Cruz Mountains. Redwood City does <br /> not include any Pacific Ocean coastline and does not extend into the Santa Cruz Mountains. To identify any known <br /> paleontological resources in the vicinity of the City, a record search was conducted in June 2009, of the online <br /> database maintained by the University of California, Museum of Paleontology (UCMP) as part of the environmental <br /> analysis for the General Plan EIR. According to the UCMP online locality search tool, no records of known fossil <br /> localities exist in the plan area. The closest recorded paleontological sites are located approximately two miles <br /> south of Redwood City, in the city of Atherton. Thus, paleontological resources are not likely to be uncovered <br /> during future development and implementation of the proposed project. <br /> In the event that paleontological materials are uncovered, General Plan EIR Mitigation Measure 4.5 -2 will ensure <br /> that uncovered resources are evaluated and recovered as appropriate. Because it is subject to this General Plan <br /> mitigation measure, adoption and implementation of the Housing Element will have less than significant impact on <br /> buried paleontological resources. <br /> d) Less Than Significant Impact. No known cemeteries or human burials have been identified on the Opportunity <br /> Sites. However, it is possible that unknown human remains could be located in the area, and if proper care is not <br /> taken during future housing project construction completed pursuant to Housing Element policy, particularly during <br /> excavation activities, damage to or destruction of these unknown remains could occur. General Plan EIR <br /> Mitigation Measure 4.5 -3a requires that the County coroner be contacted in the event of accidental discovery of <br /> human remains in any location other than a dedicated cemetery.
