of people even outside of school hours. The proposed improvements will
increase safety of people walking and bicycling to and around the schools.
Many of the improvements will atso benefit people whose commutes pass by
these schools. This is especially true in the case of improvements along
collector and arterial streets in the project area. Examples of this include:
• Farm Hill Boulevard and Jefferson Avenue (Roy Cloud and John Gill
schools)which are major arterials in Redwood City. (see Project Area
Map in Appendix B),
• Alameda de las Pulgas (Roosevelt School), and
• Roosevelt Avenue (Hawes Community School).
b. Is pedestrian and/or bicycle safety improved because of the project?
Yes No ❑
Explain and cite any relevant history pertaining to accidents and safety issues
in the immediate project vicinity:
All of the proposed improvements respond to concerns raised in meetings with
parents, caregivers, and school personnel about the challenges of safely
getting children to school on foot or by bike. Common concerns are the speed
and volume of traffic near schools, difficulty in crossing major streets, and lack
of curb ramps. The Redwood City Safe Routes to School Report identified 15
collisions involving children within '/ miles of the participating schools over a
five-year period.
The proposed improvements increase safety in the following ways:
• Increase awareness of school children—items such as updating school
warning signage, pavement markings and removing overgrown plants
increase awareness that children are present and increase the ability of
drivers to see children —encouraging them to slow down, thereby
increasing their ability to stop quickly if needed.
• Improve accessibility— People forced to use nearby driveways currently
enter the street at unexpected locations, potentially putting them a risk from
REV;09-04-14 VR 22
ATTY/AGR/2014.160/SAN MATEO COUNTY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY
