I II . ,. <br /> <br /> Michele Jackson, Executive Director of Shelter Network, thanked Council for the <br />-. past support and urged support for the recommendations for Maple Street and <br /> Redwood Family House. She stated that the services provided at these two <br /> facilities are the safety net services provided to hoJ11eless families and individuals <br /> i!1 crisis that allow them to return back to self sufficiepcy and ultimately permanent <br /> hu'11es of their own. There were 269 Redwood City rtisidents served last year at <br /> both of these two facilities. The success rate is 100%, at Maple Street 90% of the <br /> clients went onto something more stable, and 79% of the graduates of the <br /> transitional program returned to homes of their own. <br /> Kitty Lopez, Executive Director of Samaritan House, thanked Council for the <br /> support for Safe Harbor Shelter. The hope is to provide emergency shelter to 70 <br /> residents from Redwood City. <br /> Aldo Ibarra and John Berkhausen, representing La Raza Centro Legal, thanked <br /> the City and the Council for support in assisting the community. They reminded <br /> the community that there is a first Thursday monthly opportunity at the Fair Oaks <br /> Community Center from 9 a.m.-noon to obtain information and assistance. An <br /> additional component is that the agency will be going out to adult schools to <br /> educate students on their housing rights and offer assistance on landlord/tenant <br /> issues. The phone no. to call La Raza Centro Legal is 1-866-4LA-RAZA (1-866- <br /> 452-7292). <br />.~ Melissa Lukin, Director of CORA (Community Overcoming Relationship Abuse), <br /> thanked Council for support of their agency and proposal. She further explained <br /> the merger of agencies and its results. Countywide free and confidential services <br /> are offered and most importantly, it is the only emergency shelter for domestic <br /> violence survivors in the county. She stated that the same 15 beds since 1978 are <br /> the only ones available and the proposed allocation of funds would be critical to <br /> enabling the ability to meet the needs of those in need of help. <br /> M/S FousUHoward to close the public hearing. The motion passed by a <br /> unanimous voice vote. <br /> Council Member Bain stated that as Council liaison to the Housing and Human <br /> Concerns Committee (HHCC), he can assure Council that throughout the <br /> deliberation of the HHCC, due diligence was applied and tough choices were <br /> made while considering Council's priorities.
