C .• - . .
 RECREATION DIVISTON MONTHLY REPaRTS
, JNIARY 1978
CENTER OPERATIONS AND SPECIAL INTERESTS
Veterans' Memorial Building
On January 13, a Senior Square Dance Group was started and over 40 senior
citizens attended the first day. The group meets every Friday either
at the Veterans Building or at the Community Activities Building from
1 :30 to 4:(0 p.m.- On January 27th, there-.were over 100 senior citizens
attending he class. This is presented free by caller Joe Hudin fram
San Francisco. Mr. Hudin is a retired Navy man and former lead guitar
player with Buck Owens. Square Dance is providing much needed physical
activity on a fun basis for the seniors plus it stimulates social inter-
action.
The Camellia Auction was held in the Redwood Room on January 14, from
8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. It was very successful .
Community Activities Buildin
As a part of the custodial study which was undertaken last year, we have
now implemented one of the suggested alternatives which is the contracting
of a private custodial service to perforvn the maintenance at night. This
program began on January l6, with D.S.P, Janitorial Service, and seems
to be working well so far. The daytime setups, room arrangements and
light clean-up chores are performed by a CETA employee. The program
will be closely evaluated to determine its merits for future budgeting.
ecial Interest Classes
Winter classes began January 16, and rgistrations are generally very
good. Several new programs are off to a very good start. They are
gymnastics with about 48 registrations in 3 classes; ice skating with
about 40 in 2 classes; bridge with 30 in one class; and basic backpacking
instruction with 11 . Tiny tots is full as usual with 225 children per
week attending classes.
Hoover School Recreation Project
The comnunity school recreation pilot program initiated at Hoover School
in October is progressing well . The noon-time program and the Tuesday/
Thursday evening programs are providing much needed activity for the
young people of the community. For various reasons the Christmas holiday
program was relatively unsuccessful . Supervision was provided at the
-10- .
