`
PARK DTdISION MONTHLY R:EP.ORT
JANUARY 1978
The heavy rains during the month curtailed the routine mairrtenance of
the park areas due to saturated soil conditions making it nearly
impossible to operate motorized equipment in t he parks. Maintenance
crews continued with the routine park sanitation tasks and initiated
some winter pruning in the shrub bed areas. Rains, however, did offer
an opportunity to catch up with several projects which were set aside
for inclement weaher projects which could be accomplished undercover
at the Municipal Service Center. Such tasks as the repair and painting
of picnic tables and play apparatus, the construction of shelving and
storage cabinets for supplies, improvement of the housekeeping of the
materials and supplies at the Pool warehouse, and the catching up
with deferred maintenance on some of the equipment are typical of some
of tre jobs completed. Additionally, several drainage problems which
became evident in the parks were corrected.
Rainy weather also offered an opportunity to enroll several of the Park
Maintenance personnel in special training classes sponsored by the
University of California Cooperative Extension Service which resulted
in the certification of the employees to handle pesticides and herbi-
cides. One Tree Trimmer and six Gardener/Caretakers attended these
courses.
The Facility Maintenance crews supplemented their regular work requests
with a variety of special projects including the replacement of restroom
roof at Hawes Park with a new composition roof, the replacement of concrete
benches which were stolen from Wellesley Crescent Park, and the repainting
of the renovated filtration system at the swimming pools. The crews also
initiated the refurbishing of the structures on Broadway whieh were
installed as a part of the downtown beautification. The four kiosks
were in need of electrical repair and the repair of all of the doors.
The kiosks, together with the benches, bicycle stands, and newspaper
stands, will be painted as a part of this refurbishing program.
January's severe storms kept the Street Tree Section extremely busy
responding to reports of priority storm damage. Crews answered 53
separate work requests on storm related problems and responded to 6
emergency callback situations at the request of the Police and Fire
Departments.
In addition to their normal workload, the Forestry crews also completed
block pruning assignments on the 1300 block of Alameda, the 1600 biock of
Anamor, the 1200 block of Windsor Way, the 3700 block of Rolison Road,
the 1100 block of King Street, the 1100 block of Adams Street, the 900
block of 7th Avenue, the 500 block of Elm Street and Wayne Court East.
The crews also continue with their dormant season sycamore pruning project.
-9-
