  r+v'
PARK DIVISION MNTHLY REPORT
, MARGH ]978
Park Division personnel assised in the preparation for the March 5
Arbor Day Ceremonies held at Dingee Park Circ7e. A 24inch boxed
specimen Queen Palm was planted in honor of Mr. James DeBenedetti .
" The Palm tree was a special requestof Mr. DeBenedetti and, there-
fore, replaced the usual Redwood tre planting.
The Easter Bowl was again prepared for the Annual Sunrise Services
on Easter Sunday. The Northside District crew with the help of CETA
personne7 were called upon to prepare the area. The Department also
furnished the piano for the event as well as the speaker's podium.
First aid training was conducted by the Personnel Department on the
23rd and 24th of March designed for handling emergency situations
in case of accidents. The course was taken by those employees in
the Division that had not previously reEeived the training and plans
call for future training session5 to update those employees who had
previously received the trainin. There were seven Gardener/Caretakers,
one Tree Trimmer, one Senior Craftworker, dnd the Park Mechanic in
attendance at this session.
All turf areas were fertilized during the month of March. This is an
initial step in the revitalization af many of the turf areas which
suffered from drought conditions. In that no ferti]izer was applied
during the drought, several areas Were in poor condition and were
suffering from severe war resulting from continued use throughout
the drought. Renovation plans currently underway include the use of
chemical herbicides to reduce the weed infestaton and the reseeding
of many worn areas. In addition, several areas wi11 be replaced with
sod in order to expedite the repair work in time for spring baseball
use. Continuous rain showers during the month af March have delayed
this renovation operation; however, every effort will be made to pre
pare the areas for anticipated use this spring and summer.
With the drought constraints now withdrawn, beddng plants have been
ordered for installation in the Flower bed areas in the dawntown area
as well as in selected areas on various medians, parks, and public
buildings. Approximately half of the areas wi11 be replanted with
perennial material and the balance wi11 be planed with annuals which
aliaw greater flexibility for seasonal color in the highly visible
areas.
!aork is underway preparing the sprinkler systems throughout the park
system for expected summer use. A considerable amount of vandalism
has resulted in damage to many of the risers and sprinkler heads par-
ticularly in he downtown area and the Redwood Shores area.
