� - � � ' <br /> PARKS & RECREATION COMMISSION ✓ / , <br /> MINUTES OF APRIL 12, 1978 <br /> The special meeting of the Parks & Recreation Commission was called to <br /> order by Vice-Chairman Anderson at 4:10 p.m. , in the Conference Room of <br /> the Community Activities Building, 1400 Roosevelt Avenue, Redwood City. <br /> MEMBERS PRESENT: Commissioners Anderson, Hayes, Knecht, Weintraub <br /> MEMBERS ABSENT: Commissioners Castle, Pound, Schlesinger <br /> (Corranissioner Schlesinger arrived at 4:15 p.m.) <br /> STAFF PRESENT: Max C. Weeks, Parks & Recreation Director <br /> Bill Paulson, Recreation Superintendent <br /> Vice-Chairman Anderson indicated this special meeting of the Comnission <br /> was called to begin a study on competition in youth sports. It is the <br /> eventual goal of the CorrBnission to arrive at policy statements and imple- <br /> ment them into the various recreation activities through the Department. <br /> Mr. Weeks reviewed the list of reference materials on the subject avail- <br /> able at the Main Library in Redwood City. <br /> (COMMISSIONER SCHLESINGER ARRIVED AT 4:15 P.M.) <br /> Mr. Weeks indicated that the City of Carson had implemented a study on <br /> competition in youth sports. He contacted the D.irector, Howard Homan, <br /> inquiring as to how they initiated the study and how they implemented <br /> their findin s. After the study had been initiated, the Comnission <br /> (from Carson�} invited public participation and input. It was suggested <br /> to have both pro-competition and anti-competition members on a panel <br /> for public input. This will be considered further as the study pro- <br /> gresses. <br /> Bill Paulson indicated that he had his staff inembers prepare a short <br /> description and a definition of competition including any questions <br /> that they may have on the subject. They included the present status <br /> of competition in their various areas. This data will be reviewed <br /> by the Commission. <br /> (COMMISSIONER ANDERSON EXCUSED HIMSELF AT 4:54 P.M.) <br /> It was suggested that the reference materials be divided among the <br /> Commissioners to read and report on at the next meeting. Chairman <br /> Schlesinger assigned the reference materials to the Commissioners present. <br /> It was moved to adjourn the meeting and schedule the next work session <br /> on competition policy for May 10, 1978, 4:00 p.m. The motion passed <br /> and the meeting was adjourned at 5:30 p.m. <br />
