_ .
""^ ,

PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
SEPTEMBER 1978
The fall sports programs are now officially underway. This required
soccer fields to be prepared at the Henry Ford and Kennedy schools as
well as at Bechet, Griffin and McGarvey Fields. Additionally, the after-
school flag football program required the field preparation at seven
elementary schools plus Stulsaft, Hawes and Red Morton Parks. The
maintenance crews were successful in "burning in" the lines on these
fields which greatly reduces the labor necessary for follow-up marking.
Additionally, the soccer organizations are providing for their own field
marking which is of great assistance.
The Grounds Maintenance crews took advantage of the warm weather during
the latter part of September to continue with their spraying for broadleaf
weed control in the turf areas. The good weather has also assisted with
the renovation of several of the turf areas.
Flower bed planting will be restricted to the City Hall , the City entrances
at E1 Camino and Veterans Boulevard and small areas at the Municipal Ser-
vice Center. These plant beds are currently being prepared to receive
a fall and winter planting.
Joining the Street Tree Section during the month of September was George
Bothwell in the Tree Trimmer classification. Mr. Bothwell brings lengthy
experience to the Department from his many years in the industry. His
addition fills the quota of classified personnel assigned to this section.
The Park Supervisor position remains vacant, however, the recruiting for
this position has now been completed. It is anticipated that the exami-
nation and the appointment to the position will be completed in October.
The Islands and Circles crew in addition to maintaining their regular
assigned areas is preparing selected sites for fall and winter renova-
tion including some new plantings. A cooperative planting effort with
the Sierra Club resulted in tree planting of specimen trees at Spinas
and Chestnut Parks. This joint effort has resulted in the planting
of 11 redwood and oak trees at three park sites.
During the month of September, the Street Tree Section has continued to
reduce the backlog of trimning and removal requests. The crews have
also completed major restructuring and bracing work on the large deodora
cedar tree located on the City Hall lawn. This is an effort to prevent
further damage to the tree during the coming winter storms. Continued
warm weather has necessitated the retention of the supplemental watering
program with the water truck for selected street and specimen trees as
well as in some non-irrigated park areas.
-4-
