 . , ^ ,

PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
OCTOBER 1978
The removal of grafFiti throughout Mezes Park was completed and Park
Division personnel followed up with painting the inside of the rest-
room structure. The graffiti throughout the park was so 6ad that it
was necessary to contract with a private building maintenance service
to correct the problem. The maintenance crew also refinished the
Stulsaft Park restroom which had also been despoiled with graffiti.
The bedding plants are now being planted in the few select areas which
will be receiving floral plantings. The downtown area, the Veterans
Boulevard entrance to the City, and the Municipal Service Center area
will receive the annual bedding plants. In that the Department will be
receiving some restoration funds for the Park Facility Maintenance pro-
gram, a special effort will be made to renovate and revitalize some of
the landscaped areas which have suffered rather severely from both the
drought situation and the lowering of maintenance standards resultant
from Proposition 13 reductions. The renovation of the areas will be
accomplished in such a manner so as to assist in reducing future main-
tenance costs. A good example is the accomplishment of a major clean
up project on the mini park at Breze and Canyon. This work incorpor-
ates the restructuring of the edges and shrub beds plus the redesign and
planting of ground covers and shrubs in key locations in this landscaped
area.
The turf areas at Red Morton Park are being heavily aerated a greater
frequency this fall in order to help alleviate the compaction which is
resulting from the heavy use the area receives, particularly due to the
soccer and football activity. This will assist the turf in maintaining
as vigorous a growth as possible as the winter season approaches. Some
reseeding will become necessary as areas of extreme wear become apparent.
Leav'ing the Department this month are George Bothwell and Sam Noonan who
are resigning from the Tree Trimmer classification. Mr. Bothwell left
in order to move to Florida and Mr. Noonan is leaving in order to estab-
lish his own tree service business. Recruiting procedures have been ini-
tiated for these positions and the jobs will be filled as soon as possible.
Additionally, Percy Handley, the only remaining Tree Trimmer successfully
competed for a Heavy Equipment Operators position in the Public 4lorks
Department and will be transferring to that Department the middle of
November. This results in a complete turn over in tree trimming personnel
which for a time will reduce the capability of the Section to cope with
existing work loads.
-5-
