. _._..,...._ ___ . __
ti x
• .
2. Weekday games? Almost all parents of kids participating liked the concept
of weekday games.
3. Registration fees? We explained to each group why we charged a registra-
tion fee; the primary reason for the fee, as explained was to insure a
commitment on the part of both the participant and the parent too. This
has proven to be a valid assumption since we have had no game forfeits.
All groups thought this concept was fair.
4. Were fees a financial hardship? All children who wanted to participate
and could not afford registration fees were taken care of by the Parks
and Recreation Department, school or interested third party. There seemed
to be no real concern about the $2.00 to $2.50 charge, especially since
all participants received team shirts and league patches.
5. Transportation? Because games are now played outside of neighborhood
areas we asked groups if this was a problem. There were no real concerns
about transportation. The parents seem to accept this very well .
• 6. Playinctime? We explained our philosophy on playing time. We insist every
boy and girl play at least 1/4 or 1/2 of every game. This was overwhelm-
ing favorably received and supported.
Generally all groups were thankful to the City for taking charge and
presenting sucti a quality sports program in lieu of the Redwood City School
District's non-financial participation. Several parents have said, "It's
better than it was before" .
Spring Proqram Comments
Roving leadership? It was explained to all groups that depending on the
amount of funds available after the sports segment is completed, we will be
planning various activities to be presented by a roving crew of leaders at
selected schools at both the elementary and junior high school levels. We
asked for their comments and program suggestions for possible activities to
be implemented this spring.
Spring sports? Most PTA and PTO groups indicated that track should be one
of our programs in the spring.
Lifetime sports? Several groups brought up "lifetime sports" such as golf,
tennis, archery, bowling, etc. They would like to see their children exposed
to this type of activity.
We were .surprised to hear so much interest in sports from the groups
visited. Our program concepts for spring originally were special activity
type (skateboard and kite contests, talent shows, arts and crafts, etc. )
conducted by our roving leader teams. 4Je still feel this type of recreation will
be well accepted once implemented.
-2-
