warming trends have caused the fungus to spread in several localized
areas throughout the City , The application of spray materials undoubtedly
helped prevent a large infestation . No permanent damage is expected
except possibly on the trees which were weak and in poor health prior
to infestation .
Water stress injuries and related effects , particularly to magnolia species ,
have become more evident , and could be a potential problem for our street
trees in Redwood City . The over-all affect of internal water defects is to
reduce vegetative growth , thus resulting in serious disturbances of many
physiological processes . Additionally , many magnolia trees are suffering
premature defoliation and exhibit a very chlorotic appearance . Home
owners are urged to water their trees when stress conditions become
apparent .
- 13 -
