The Port of Redwood City Development Program - Item 1-a Cont ' d .
page two
sessions in the Sequoia Yacht Club building are conducted
simultaneously with on the water training , so the training
area should be nearby.
b . Floats are needed at the edge of this area for access for
hand launched boats and also so that the instructors can be
right on the water to give instructions to the young people .
c . A storage rack for lightweight hand launchable boats ( up to
14 feet long ) adjacent to this area is essential. The
present storage shed near the fish ?_ng dock is well utilized
and has a waiting list .
d . If, as the plan suggests on Page 139 , the launch ramp and
facilities are relocated, such as further out on Redwood
Creek, that area would not be satisfactory as the channel
is narrower and less protected. The relocation would also
divert boating activity from in front of the proposed
restaurants .
In:)order to overcome the concerns outlined above , the
following suggestions could be an asset to the overall
plan. Floats could be provided along the shoreline
directly below the proposed restaurants and shops .
Public access to these floats with provisions for hand
launching boats would be a necessity. These floats
could also be used for guest berths for vessels visiting
the commercial area . Storage facilities for small boats
could be provided beneath the restaurants directly behind
the floats . With a nominal fee , this storage area could
be a profitable operation . The above features would
tend to concentrate maritime activity in the area
nearest the restaurants and shops and enhance the view
of the harbor as pointed out on Page lul of the report .
2 . Our second area of concern is encouragement of recreational boat
activity in general . The inner harbor area and Redwood Creek pro-
vide some o `' the best recreational boating areas in San Francisco
Bay. The plan should include and emphasize more features to en-
courage use of the area for recreational boating . Adequate
launching facilities with floats for temporary tie-ups , a hoist
and a dry storage area are all important . Again , these facilities
could be self supporting , particularly if improvements are made to
encourage use by the general public .
3 . We have no specific comments regarding the various possibilities
for additional berths other than that the figures presented on the
market demand for additional berths seem realistic and we recognize
the need for expansion. Many of our members have utilized berths
at the local marinas for many years , and we would be happy to offer
the benefit of our experience in terms of the advantages and dis -
advantages of existing facilities .
