PARK DIVISION MONTHLY REPORT
OCTOBER 1976
The Grounds Maintenance Crews of the Park Division have been continuing
with their fall renovation of turf areas together with preparing plant
beds for the fall flower planting . The planting of the winter annuals
and bulbs was delayed somewhat resultant from the inability of the ven-
dors to supply the plants at the prescribed time . In that planting is
now underway , it is felt that this delay will not significantly inhibit
the growth and flowering of the bulbs and winter annuals .
Thr Building and Facility Maintenance Crews of the Park Division are
continuing intheir efforts in the fall refurbishing on renovating of
the playground apparatus throughout the City . As of this date , Maddux
and Chestnut Parks have been completed and work is continuing in the
other play areas .
This crew is also completed the automatic irrigation installations at
the Veterans Cul -de- Sac and Duane/Hopkins Island . Electrical installa-
tions are now being completed so as to complete the automation of these
irrigation systems . The work at Laurie Duncan Parkway has also been
completed and all that remains if the electrical hookup for the auto-
matic system .
During the month of October , the Forestry Crews completed some additional
experimental block systematic pruning projects . As work orders allow ,
these projects are undertaken in order to lead the way into a fully
implemented systematic pruning program in the future . The areas receiv-
ing this treatment most recently include the 300 block of E Street , the
100 block of Vera , 1400 block of Sierra , and 10th Avenue adjacent to
Taft School . As was found in earlier experimental pruning programs ,
systematic pruning increases productivity and reduces cost and travel
time significantly . The goal will be to fully equip two trimming crews ,
one of which will remain on systematic pruning while the other handles
the order system and emergency orders . Eventually , it would be possible
for both crews to be fully occupied in systematic pruning except for
emergency conditions .
In the area of in - service training for the division , five gardeners and
one leadman are attending a five-week course involving landscape water
control , soils and soils salinity . This course is sponsored by the
Department of Agriculture and the University of California and is held
at San Mateo every Thursday from 1 : 30 p . m . to 4 : 30 p . m . Those attending
indicate that the information they are receiving from this course will
be very helpful to them in their work . In addition to the above train-
ing , a one- day seminar involving the maintenance of irrigation systems
- 12-
