b
Civic Cultural Commission
Minutes of Meeting
May 1 , 1975 Page 3
National Register of Historical Monuments . Mr . Buickerood
said The National Endowment for the Arts had commissioned a
study of the Arts in the United States , which is known as the
'karris Report', and a smaller report called " California in The
Arts . " The California report has been ordered for all Com-
mission members © He said one of the most important things to
remember is that people in the lower economic groups are among
those who support the Arts very strongly , but do not always
have transportation . He said the outstanding thing about the
Seminar was the opportunity of meeting and talking with many
influential people in the Arts .
Mr . Buickerood said there are many grants , such as CETA , National
Endowment for the Arts , City Spirit , and several John Do Rocke -
feller Foundations . There are also grants provided by business .
He said the Commission should have membership in the Associated
Council of the Arts , California Alliance for the Arts , and Ad -
vocates for the Arts . There are presently three bills before
the California Legislature asking for funds for the Arts .
Funding for the California Arts Commission was recently cut off
by the Governor °
He suggested that the Commission get together with some of the
people in the Community who are interested in various aspects
of the Arts and form a subcommittee for the exchange of ideas
and activities .
Mrs . Fonda mentioned that at the Youth in Government Day , at
which she represented the Commission , Councilman Norris had
brought up the fact that he felt the Cultural Commission should
be involved in finding a sister city for Redwood City. Another
program mentioned was community gardening ° Mr . Ferrando said
study has been given to this type of project but it would be a
year or so before anything of this kind got under way. Marcia
suggested that some of the vacant lots in the city be put to
use in this way , calling upon community groups to work together
in the endeavor . Mr . Ferrando said a conference on community
gardening had brought out the fact that it is very important
to have a very strong director or coordinator for its success °
She said another subject discussed was transportation to Cahada
College °
Mrs . Fonda i. said she felt neither the Commission members nor
the students were adequately prepared . It was suggested the
Commission recommend that the program be better developed and
Commission members be alerted sufficiently in advance of the
day to be well prepared as this provides a good opportunity
for indoctrination of the youth in cultural awareness .
