Karl Vollmayer , Redwood City <br /> Librarian <br /> Since there was not a quorum of commissioners present , Mr . <br /> Weeks opened an informal meeting at 7 : 45 , p . m. <br /> AGENDA ITEM 1 : Regarding the proposed mural in the Children ' s <br /> Library patio , Mr . Vollmayer said the project started as a <br /> plan for improving the setting around the City Hall and Library <br /> for safety purposes . This involves a good deal of architec - <br /> tural work as well as light standards . It was also planned <br /> to sign the library so it will be more easily identified from <br /> the street . This pointed up the poor entrance to the Children ' s <br /> Library and so redoing this entrance became part of the project . <br /> It also involves putting in a ramp for the handicapped . This <br /> will come from the front of City Hall , through the patio , and <br /> into the entrance to the Children ' s Room . He said he had had <br /> a conversation with Mr . J . D. Stobal , Jr . , who lives in Woodside , <br /> is a sculptor , and is interested in getting some sculpture in <br /> the downtown area . He would like to take on the project of <br /> the wall mural for only the cost of materials . Mr . Vollmayer <br /> told him he thought a design might be selected by competition . <br /> Mr . Stobal has some pieces in his home which he would be glad <br /> to show and a piece in the garden of the residence of Dr . Fry <br /> in Portola Valley. He has done some work with epoxy and also <br /> in mosaic ; also , mosaic relief and epoxy in three -dimensional <br /> molds , and ceramic bas relief which can be glazed . He said he <br /> would need some space in which to work , such as a warehouse . <br /> He would be willing to make a proposal . At this time he has <br /> no ideas in the way of subject matter . <br /> Mr . Vollmayer said he feels that a competition is helpful in <br /> eliminating criticism about selection . Mr . Weeks said there <br /> are also advantages in having a single professional perform a <br /> work of this kind . Mr . Buickerood felt it would be good to <br /> have several persons participate by submitting sketches , al - <br /> though not actually conducting a competition . This would <br />
