CIVIC CULTURAL COMMISSION
Minutes of Meeting
February 4 , 1975 Page 2
include Canada College and others . He mentioned that a mural
is a public piece of art and therefore should be created more
in middle ground than being " far out . " Wood could be used -
perhaps a series of panels in redwood , depicting scenes of
Redwood City history.
Mr . Vollmayer suggested that at the time a design is submitted
a scale for materials should be submitted also , in case funds
would need to be approved by the Council . The project will
probably go to bid and construction start in March .
Mr . Weeks said he felt it would be necessary to set a possible
amount . Mrs . Groberg suggested that if schools were to be
involved in submitting designs , it might be necessary to let
them know in time to submit them before school is out .
Mr. Buickerood said he would like to have designs submitted
by quite a number of persons . Mr . Vollmayer said it might be
well to have the construction completed and then request designs
since by that time it would be better know& what funds might be
available . He suggested that another use for the panel area
might be some kind of a continuing demonstration of art ,
perhaps a changing series of art works by students . Mr . Weeks
said if there were exterior displays of this kind it would be
necessary to build cases for them. He suggested that the
Commission might move ahead by developing the concept , perhaps
appointing a subcommittee to study the problem and set up some
ground rules .
Mr . Vollmayer will call Mr . Stobal and let him know that he
will be contacted later when the plans are developed .
Mr . Vollmayer then referred to the new Archives Committee which
will be getting under way soon. Materials collected will be a
contribution to our heritage from the past . This endeavor was
described in a REDWOOD CITY TRIBUNE editorial page article on
Saturday , February 1 .
He also reported that arrangements have been made with the
American Glass group for us to have the largest display case
during the month of April for display prior to and during the
Quilt Show . He will also allow us to use the small display
cases on each side of the entrance a
AGENDA ITEM 2 : Mr . Weeks showed designs presented by Mr . Tom
Whitson for the downtown furniture . The consensus was generally
accepting of the concepts .
AGENDA ITEM 3 ( Goals and Objectives ) was deferred to the March
meeting.
