`
•
,
LMT\1D FOR PEOPLE ORGANIZATION
. , - . z.
4 ; ,-1 • j Aa i
 'A
/7
"' "'' ' BOX 295 REDWOOD CITY, CALIFORNIA 94064 364-7777
12 December 1972
Housing Concerns Committee
Redwood City
California
Dear Committee Members :
Land for People would like to make a response to some
of the issues discussed at the Housing Concerns Committee
meeting of November 22 last and present an addition to our
statement dated November 17 .
We agree with the Committee that the housing problems
we face are of a "dual " nature ; that is , encompassing both
redevelopment in existing areas of Redwood City and new de-
velopment on previously unbui l t parcels . We believe the
realities of the present situation , however , make it incum-
bent upon us to place the emphasis on the issue of new den
velopment in Redwood Shores .
We understand that building low and moderate income
housing in the Shores will not solve all the housing prob-
lems in Redwood City . However , significant decisions will
be made in the near future as to whether and/or under what
mutual agreements the Mobil Corporation will buy and develop
the Shores . It is at this point that the City must make its
position crystal clear to Mobil in regards to what it will
require in terms of making Redwood Shores an inclusive com-
munity with significant proportions of affordable homes for
lower income families .
It is helpful , too , to keep in mind that the Mobil
Corporation ' s primary and overriding goal is to make a pro-
fitable deal and any magnanimous concerns for social or com-
munity problems , if present , are always secondary . A good
local of the t. • T of ' .L . . built-4 Y. , corporate
local example o,f the kind oJ new community built by
interests without input and controls relative to economic
inclusiveness is Foster City , now owned by Centex Corporation.
The proposals forwarded by Mary Henderson and Robert
Norris at the November 22 meeting as additions to the General
Plan of Redwood Shores are a step in the right direction.
We would again isuggest , however , that now is the proper
time for stronger and more specific action in regards to
this issue . The Hen, ._>rson proposal suggests a "statement
- LAND IS A RESOURCE, NOT A COMMODITY .
