phrase read , "the high cost of money that accompanied the wartime economy . "
Mr . Floyd said that that would be clear enough, everybody knew what war was
being fought .
Mr . Norris also suggested that not only the scarcity , but also the "high price "
of land be mentioned as a cause for the slowing of the boom .
Housing Aide Ransom noted that there was a mistake on Page Fourteen, "Number of
Rooms . " Slightly more than half of Redwood City ' s units have "four rooms or
less , " he said , not "less than four rooms . "
On Page Sixteen , "Rooms Per Person , " Mr . Norris asked whether the "high rooms
per person ratio in the central tracts " really reflects "a high number of
households there of one or two elderly people whose children no longer live
with them, " or whether it reflects the fact that Redwood City is becoming an
older community . Chairman Keckley pointed out that this trend was reflected
in the cutback in church pre- schools in neighborhoods that ten years ago were
abounding with them .
On Page Twenty , "Price , " Chairman Keckley pointed out that while the price of
housing locally is much higher than the national average , so is the income ,
these things somewhat balancing each other out .
On Page Twenty-two , " Size of Households and Units , " Mr . Soderer said that the
paragraph discussing San Pablo ' s housing unit size needed explaining . Housing
Aide Ransom said that that was one of those paragraphs which keeps getting
whittled and whittled until it is a shadow, of its former self . The Committee
suggested it be dropped .
On Page Twenty-four , " Incomes and Housing Costs , " Lou Knowles asked why there
was such a spread in the estimated number of households earning between $6 , 000
and $7, 250 which "may have to spend more than a quarter of their income for
shelter . " Housing Aide Ransom explained that to arrive at those figures he
had had to use two unsatisfactory sources , one probably low, the other probably
high, and that while these sources had been not too far apart on their lower
income estimates , their differences became greater with this smaller, moderate -
income sample .
Chairman Keckley asked if the Committee wouldn ' t like to call it quits for the
day and pick up on Page Twenty- four at the next Housing Concerns Committee
meeting . The meeting was adjourned at 8 : 20 A .M.
The next meeting of the Housing Concerns Committee is May 24 , 1972 .
MINUTES HOUSING CONCERNS COMMITTEE MAY 10, 1972 PAGE 3 OF 3
