Jefferson Avenue , Redwood City
•
6
Chairman Paul Keckley called the meeting to order at 7 : 00 A . M . Chairman Keckley
introduced Urban Affairs Specialist Richard Rivas .
♦ Chairman Keckley referred to a letter sent to HCC members by citizens concerned
with development in Redwood Shores :
On October 10 Mobil Estates , Ltd . gave the Planning Cox-mission an
outline of a proposal to donate land for a prototype low and moderate
income housing development in Redwood Shores . We think that this
proposal should be examined carefully by your committee as part of
the overall negotiations between Mobil and the City . We therefore
ask you to invite Mobil to an evening session of the Housing Concerns
Committee sometime in November to discuss their proposal in greater
detail .
The letter was signed by Louis L . Knowles , Lorene Wilson , Rene Masterson,
Larry Irons , Eugene Moriguchi, Dick Bimson and Maxim Rice .
Chairman Keckley said that he was opposed to holding such a session . He was
afraid much time and energy would be lost if the Committee got involved every
time a prospective Shores buyer ran up a trial balloon, he said .
Mary Henderson said that she agreed fully . A prospective purchaser of the Shores
might otherwise "use" the committee in its activities or demands . She said that
the Committee should take up the question only on the recommendation of the
City Manager or the City Council . The Committee had too many other things that
it should be concerned with. Besides , the proposal referred to was not an
official Mobil proposal . .
Jim Smith said that the City had a new proposal by Mobil . A discussion that
got into a question of donating land for low moderate-income housing could very
well put the City ina bad bargaining position at this time .
- Bob Norris gaid that he thinks Mobil has shown that it is not ducking the housing
issue and that examination of its proposal by the HCC would be "premature .
