She thanked the Council for refer- <br /> ring the subject to staff for the report being heard <br /> at this time . (See Minute Order 74-207) <br /> Mary Shea, 70 Turnsworth, stated that the letter of Mr. <br /> Gallagher, who opposes installation of the stop signs, <br /> contains only 104 signatures and suggested some of them <br /> were names of persons not residing in Redwood City. <br /> Mrs. Shea commented generally on the traffic situation <br /> in her area of Whipple Avenue and urged installation <br /> of the 4-way stop. <br /> Sue Friedenbach, 81 Melrose Place, stated that senior <br /> citizens also have difficulty crossing Whipple Avenue, <br /> and their needs were not considered in the staff re- <br /> port. Mrs. Friedenbach stated that the increase in <br /> accidents Mr. Gee suggests will occur if a 4-way stop <br /> is installed are only "rear-enders" while her concern <br /> is for the lives of children crossing the street. <br /> Discussion followed and Mr. Fales, Mr. Pusich and Mr. <br /> Gee replied to questions from Council regarding traffic <br /> vow warrants; the difficulty in getting all children in the <br /> area to cross Whipple Avenue at one point when that <br /> point requires walking an extra block or two; the fact <br /> that school children and other persons on bicycles are <br /> not pedestrians but, by law, are considered in the same <br /> category as other vehicles driven on the streets; and <br /> whether or not staff has given correct interpretations <br /> to the numbers of children involved as indicated on the <br /> charts accompanying the staff report. <br /> Bob Nurisso, 1800 Whipple, suggested that the 4-way <br /> stop signs, at approximately a cost of $200, would be <br /> less expensive than the crossing guard recommended in <br /> the staff report. <br /> Stan Mullen, 1548 Whipple, commented on traffic condi- <br /> tions in his area of Whipple Avenue. <br /> Jim Gallagher, 4 King Street, referred to his letter <br /> containing about 100 signatures in opposition to the <br /> establishment of 4-way stop signs at the subject in- <br /> tersection. Mr. Gallagher suggested that the signs <br /> +am would cause traffic congestion, create air pollution, <br /> and increase the accident rate.
