Civic Cultural Commission report re Com- Report of City Manager 4/2/81
munity Artist Residency Training Program Report of Director of Parks and Recreation
2/25/81 mai
Director of Parks and Recreation Griffiths
called attention to the brochure from CART
(Community Artist Residency Training) and
introduced Ruth Kaplan.
Ruth Kaplan, 4154 Middlefield Road, Palo Alto,
Director of California Region of CART,
described the organization and presented a film
on its program.
Discussion followed and Ms. Kaplan commented and
replied to questions regarding the cost of the
program; the cost to the City; whether it might
not be preferable to devote City support to
C.A.T. (California Actors Theatre) which needs
assistance and is already in the City; the fact
that the CART program might complement C.A.T.
in that participants will learn fundraising
techniques for the arts; the training program
for the Residency Director provided by CART;
the minimal participation of City staff in the
program; the desire of CART personnel for the
City's "blessings" on the program; and the
interest of Civic Cultural Commission members
in participating in CART.
Kay C. Mears, 315 King Street, member of the
Civic Cultural Commission, advised that the
Commission is interested in obtaining the pro-
f fessional training in techniques of fundraising
for the arts which is offered by CART and that
the one or two-week resident artist part of the
program is simply a vehicle for learning the °Aml
process. Mrs. Mears pointed out that the pro-
gram is intended to assist the community rather
Reg.Mtgs.
4/6/81
Page 3
U >
