449
AGENDA (continued) ACTION TAKEN (continued)
PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued) PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)
2. (continued) character should not be changed, suggesting a
total development plan preserving Main Street
is necessary before the subject proposal
should be approved.
Cherie Helm, 334 Lincoln, Palo Alto., owner of
142 Stambaugh, believes the outside appearance
of any new structures on Main Street should be
compatible with a "turn of the century"
appearance of Main Street, and called attention
to the valuable antique electroliers on the
street. Mrs. Helm objected to the proposed
modern facade for the new building.
Gladys Woodhams, 601 Melville, Palo Alto,
owner of 1018 Main Street which is a shop
operated in a State Historic Landmark Building,
read from a letter to her from Fred Herring
stating his desire to cooperate with those
interested in Main Street. Mrs. Woodhams
urged the development of an "old town" with
"turn of century" style, suggesting it would
be desirable for commercial enterprises and
save the historic street.
Michael Sposito, 903 Main, co-owner, read from
a letter from Mr. Herring commenting on inte-
gration of new and old construction on the
street. Mr. Sposito suggested owners can pre-
- serve and restore some valuable historic
buildings and that all can work in cooperation
with Herring and Worley. He suggested the
mixed use building will bring responsible
people into the street.
irrr
Nita Spangler, 970 Edgewood Road, observed that
the City owns property on Main Street and that
the Schellens collection provides information
on the history of the street in a "workingman's
town." Mrs. Spangler noted that some build-
ings may belong in the National Register while
others are junk. She suggested an overall
architectural view is needed and that she finds
nothing objectionable about accommodating
present-day needs and building code require-
ments, but that she does not like imitation.
Mrs. Spangler said there is no problem with
the mixed use proposed for the building, but
she would like to have prizewinning architec-
ture and guidelines for historic preservation.
Virginia Geller, 3648 Jefferson, member cf the
County Historic Resources Board, called atten-
tion to historic buildings on Main Street,
suggesting the City has an obligation to take
note of them. She urged that development not
take place on a piecemeal basis and suggested
Redwood City adopt the kind of guidelines
which exist in some other cities for similar
areas.
Elsie Lutze, Service League, serving as their
representative on the Main Street Committee,
said she accepts Mr. Herring's willingness to
,..., work with the Historic Committee and sug-
gested his proposal is a chance to revitalize
the street. Ms. Lutze also stated she favors
the proposed mixed use building.
Adj.Mtg.
1/26/81
Page 3
