Mrs. Bey read a letter from <br /> her organization urging Council to approve <br /> funds for renovation of the Center. <br /> Silvia Masaro, 1427 Oxford, advised that she <br /> takes care of some of the people from the <br /> • Center, stating it is very badly needed in <br /> the community. <br /> Johanna Wallace, Director, Center for Inde- <br /> pendence of the Disabled (CID), Belmont, <br /> urged Council support for the proposed allo- <br /> cation to the Center, noting that CID works <br /> with disabled seniors who use the Center. Ms. <br /> Wallace said the Center provides necessary <br /> support services, the need for which is <br /> greater than the need for housing. <br /> Francis , Friendly Acres, favored <br /> approval of the allocation. <br /> w <br /> Floyd Gurnsey, 740 Charter Street, former <br /> social worker, said he encountered a hostile <br /> attitude toward his efforts to find out ✓ <br /> information relating to the numbers of users <br /> and paid workers at the Center; that the <br /> Center is a "rattrap" in a high crime area and <br /> is not suitable for use as a senior center; <br /> and that only minority persons are welcome <br /> there. Mr. Gurnsey suggested that if a senior <br /> center were established at Hoover School it <br /> would serve the total East Redwood City senior <br /> community better. <br /> Tom Jordan, 1 Odessa Court, Chairman of the <br /> eni� or Citizens Advisory Committee which is <br /> working on a program for all seniors in the <br /> City which will be ready soon, noted that the <br /> Housing and Human Concerns Committee recom- <br /> mended the allocation and believes it should <br /> be supported. In response to question, Mr. <br /> Jordan advised that in his position with the <br /> Area Agency on Aging he inspected the Hoover <br /> • <br /> School, but believes it was thought not to be <br /> economically feasible to establish a senior <br /> center there.
