298
AGENDA (continued) ACTION TAKEN (continued)
PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued) PUBLIC HEARINGS (continued)
2. (continued) Education and Welfare, which operates the Fair
Oaks Senior Center, 2555 Middlefield Road, and
commented on the services provided to east
Redwood City and the Fair Oaks area senior
citizens of various ethnic backgrounds. He
asked that the funds be restored to the level
recommended by the Housing and Human Concerns
Committee.
Shea Muller, 989 Ronald Street, Half Moon Bay,
advised that she represented the San Mateo
County Area Agency on Aging, that the FOCC
Senior Center is one of the few that targets
for that particular group, and asked that funds
be restored to $20,000.
Robert Gamble, 425 Fuller Street, spoke of the
momentum gained by the Senior Center and asked
that Council change the allocation to $20,000.
Mayor Biagi pointed out that the funds for the
Center had in fact not been cut, but had been
increased from $9,000 in 1979-80 to $12,000
this year.
Frank Sheetz, 1903 E. Bayshore, spoke of the
valuable services offered by the Senior Center
that are offered nowhere else, and of the de- arm
pendence on those services by many senior citi-
zens, and indicated that the majority of people
using the Center are Redwood City residents and
therefore the responsibility for providing funds
is the City's.
Frank J. Esposito, 2434 Oregon Avenue, commented
on the long process of obtaining approval for a
senior center as an addition to the Veterans
Memorial Building under a grant from HUD; the
objections raised by individuals from the Fair
Oaks area who thought a second senior center
was not necessary; and stated that senior citi-
zens west of El Camino are equally in need of
programs and services as those in the Fair Oaks
area.
Ted Adcock, 760 Vasquez, Half Moon Bay, Chairman
of the Senior Center Committee of the Commission
on Aging, asked for an additional $8000 alloca-
tion for the Senior Drop-In Center.
Comments by Council related to the sense that
there seems to be a competitive attitude be-
tween the two centers; that Council should use
what funds are available to provide meaningful
and effective service to seniors in both areas;
that it was hoped that all could join together
and develop programs that will serve everyone.
Cliff Boxley, 670A Warrington, spoke of the wig
early efforts to start the nutrition and other
programs for older citizens, and expressed his
Reg.Mtg.
7/14/80
Page 2
